Am I REALLY the only one disappointed with TFA?

Sith is more like a religious sect. They implemented a bunch of rules... There can be only two and what not. That's how I took it. You can be a dark side user and be like "Nah... I don't need to have a master or anything... and I certainly don't wanna walk around in black all the time.

No, the Knight Sisters of Dathomir are entirely different from the Sith yet access the dark side.

Ah these make sense.

Where are you hearing that Snoke predates the Sith? I missed that.

I want to say it was Pablo, JJ, or Kasdan that said it, but I can't remember for sure right off hand. It was something I'd read a long while ago. I could be misremembering things. When I have more time maybe I'll see if I can dig it up again.

I believe you. I just haven't seen that myself yet.

All I can remember right off-hand is that it says he's old as hell in the Visual Dictionary, but when I get the chance I'll look that source that said something about him predating the sith.

Both Rebels and Clone Wars have done a great job establishing dark side characters who are not Sith.

And that means what in these movies? There is nothing that the bad guys do in The Force Awakens that I wouldn't see a Sith doing.

That within the context of the SW canonical universe non-Sith dark side users exists with precedent. And I'm pretty sure I haven't seen Snoke do anything related to the Force beyond talking about it.

I think that is kind of the point. I believe they are looking to keep the bad guys similar to what was introduced in the prior films but move away from all of the stupid rules that GL built the sith around. It opens things up a bit more for storytelling and makes things a bit more dynamic.

They want power, control, manipulate, secretive, cruel, use terror, kill the good guys yadda yadda yadda. Standard issue bad guy stuff really.
Even the older master and the younger apprentice model is there, and of course the use of light saber.
The differences will be meaningless to most, just the obsessed will fancy the nuances.

To be fair, so far, we know nothing about how the Knights of Ren operate, or what -- if anything -- Snoke has to do with the Force.

Bit early to be saying "Sith by any other name."

Are you suggesting that this guy who felt an Awakening in the Force and was known to have turned Ben to the dark side... has no Force abilities whatsoever? He seemed pretty critical about Kylo's abilities to mind rape his victims when he learned about Rey's ability to resistance him. If he cannot use the Force, what is he going to teach Kylo Ren? How to look down on people during holocalls?

We were introduced to Maz who clearly can sense the Force and is exceedingly knowledgeable about it yet she isn't a Jedi. Although there is a cut scene where she uses the Force, we don't see that in the film. Smoke might be similar, those that can, do, those that can't teach.

Who wants to bet, that there will be an asteroid chase scene, a super star Destroyer, and a cliff hanger ending in the next one, ;)

Thrawn Trilogy is SO overrated. It's ok but doesn't hold up that well.

Maybe looking back, but at the time when I read them, I felt what I thought TFA should have made me feel. It was new and exciting at the time.

Wow. I get people not liking TFA... but putting the prequels before TFA is just ludicrous. Those movies are failures on every level.

Maybe in your opinion, but when I watched the Prequels the first time, I wasn't so bored I wanted the movie to end. While watching TFA, by the time they were planting the bombs I was ready for it to be over. It was just nothing new or exciting at all.

What was exciting in the prequels?

20 minute pod race with no stakes? (and by that I mean, when I don't feel a 10 year old is in any danger, where's the fun?)

Watching canon fodder shoot at cannon fodder for ROTS? (All CG robots vs. All CG clones)... no one is showing up with a flag at any of those soldier's homes.

A 20 minute ballet routine through CG fire? It was like watching someone else play a video game where he has the game hacked so he can't die.

Speaking of video games... Super Padme brothers run through the robot gauntlet level in attack of the clones? Dying for that sequence to end.

*By the way, Threepio can barely hold a mic in Star Wars, but can somehow hold onto a swinging platform?!?! He can't even extend his arms....

Jedi council meetings.

Trade meetings.

Senate meetings.

Let's not forget that in every Star Wars movie up to this point, everyone who teaches someone how to use the Force has been shown to use the Force themselves. One of the more memorable scenes in Empire is when Luke witnesses Yoda accomplish what he wasn't able to by bringing his X-Wing out of the swamp. Everyone, including Yoda can DO and TEACH! It's not unreasonable to conclude that Snoke can use the Force.
