Mike what are you doing on here kid???
Lurking. I’ve been an RPF member for years but haven’t been posting or looking at much. Whenever I frequent the prop boards my wallet gets lighter.

I did read this thread from the beginning over the last week.

And I was in Dallas on Tuesday to look at items I wanted to bid on. Mr 7101 took it all though.

I did win a TOS red dress.

I think comparing the Phaser and X-Wing results is a bit apples and oranges. Sure, the Phaser is an iconic piece of pop culture, and it's a travesty that it sold for less than the forgery, but it was pretty beat up before any of the auction shenanigans compared to a nice example of the second most iconic ship from the most famous movie in motion picture history.

Very surprised to hear Mandel landed the X Wing, I had no idea he was that big a player. None of the conversations I've listened to on the podcast gave the impression his pockets were that large.

A travesty, to say the least.

This truly is the worst timeline. Gotta be because of the Hadron supercollider.

Still, it speaks to the general devaluing (literally) of STAR TREK. 10, 15, 20 years ago, the Jein hero would surely have sold for much, much more. And should have. To say nothing of the communicator and tricorder.

This isn't like the 2021 auction, which was clouded by doubt. This was the Real Deal.

Just wait until he crashes it into a tree, or something.

I was talking to my wife about this auction tonight, and how much I wish this stuff would go to a museum. We're in severe danger of losing these pieces forever. What's going to happen when Bob Burns passes away?

But the phaser is also an iconic part of pop culture and prop culture. And for just over half of what the fake sold for.

Madness.
The phaser may not be identified as a part of pop culture in the sense we think...

I have it on good authority that the builders of the fake that was sold were active in telling potential bidders the Jein Phaser and other props were fakes and that Heritage shouldn't be trusted...

Which I wouldn't be surprised as they are going to try and sell another one of their fakes/forgies in an upcoming auction....

"Weeeee, I'm Red Leader! Look at me! Weeeee!"

Seriously, though, this all raises the question of legal responsibility vs. moral responsibility.

Legally, the buyers of these items are free to do whatever they want. Paint them green, smash them with a hammer, use them as lawn decorations, etc.

Morally, however, one would hope they feel obliged to serve as custodians of these tools which were used to create our modern mythology, and treat them as respected artifacts.

From what he's said on the podcast, it seems if they know you have a lot of desirable, sellable items, they'll work with you to help pay off a buy by auctioning off your stuff. So he probably doesn't have that much cash handy, but enough in his collection to sell to make up for it. Makes sense for them, for they get their money in the end, AND more commissions, too!

"Phasers on stun" is a key part of the TREK lexicon, of course.

But I would totally expect the perpetrators of the 2021 fraud to pull something like this.

And consider also that a lot of the people buying these things probably fall more into the category of "idle rich" rather than "hardcore fans", and thus would be easier to sway with falsehoods.

Theres so much "stuff" those forgers are tied into over the last few years it's not funny...

I consider every "found" TOS prop since 2011-12 to be forgeries... I never expected to see a M.E. 2.0 era kinda sad
