Outdated technology or not, having the red dot sight on backwards definitely makes is useless.

In the established canon we didn't see a bunch of extra greeblies tacked onto the Pulse rifle. So the thought here is that the add ons now don't fit with the aesthetic established in the canon thus far.

Unless the 'Greebiles' are specific technology for fighting Aliens. In the last film (for Blomkamp's timeline - Aliens) it was the first time the Marines had encountered Aliens. So it makes sense that they would adapt their weaponry to this new threat.

For all we know it could be a form of upgraded motion sensor or something.

Well if it *is* and upgraged motion tracker i would hope they wouldn't use a cheap red dot sight that we all recognize as such to represent it...
