I’m a huge franchise fan and I loved Romulus. You could really tell it was a labour of love by real fans. I love how it incorporated elements from all alien movies.
Pros:
-A beautiful film visually. It struck me immediately and made me instantly love it right from the start.
-The design language being perfectly between Alien and Aliens
-The fact that the Jackson’s Star colony being based on unused concept art from 2013’s Aliens Colonial Marines awesome concept art designs.
-Real labour of love for the franchise and full of great easter eggs (minus 1 horrible one,… read on)
-A combination of elements from across the entire franchise
-David Jonsson (Andy), what a brilliant actor. As an android his portrayal of Andy runs RINGS around Fassbender’s David.
-I LOVED Ian Holm’s likeness in it. I was so surprised as the character is slowly introduced through shadows and silhouettes. It was the highlight for me. Also how he looked a little off (uncanney valley) was perfect. The fact he was damaged added to the uncanney valley.
-The F44AA and the sound it made. Like the M41A but more regular. It seems like a lower powered round as it didn’t even destroy a tv screen and just put holes in Xenomorphs rather than blow them apart like the M41A. But the design is awesome and the sound while different from M41A was very cool
-The xenomorph design for me is the best in the franchise. The weakest part of the xenomorph design for me had always been the legs as they looked too human. Alien Isolation made digitigrade legs but that was too weird. Here in Romulus it’s like a cross between Aliens and Alien Isolation. The rippled dome (so Alien & Aliens combined) the biomechanoid look from Alien and Aliens versus the rotting flesh look of Resurrection, AVP and AVPR.
-Woodruff, Gillis and all the old guys working together again after all these years.
Cons:
-The movement of the animatronic face huggers was so bad. It was even better in Aliens 38 years ago. How is that possible?
-The xenomorphs could have been better utilized, been made to be more scary and fearsome/terrifying/faster
-The entire ending being a rehash of Alien Resurrections’ Newborn. I hate Resurrection and didn’t need a 1:1 duplication of the ending. Actually, thinking about it, if I forget Resurrection exists the ending in Romulus is actually good. It’s better done than A:R.
-The “Get away from her you b****” line. That one line almost ruined the entire film. It just immediately snaps you out of the movie. It was such a “we’re making a movie honoring this movie from 1986” line. Andy should have had a line that was equally iconic but pertinent to THIS movie.
-The British accents were off putting.
-The very young cast (minus Andy). Actors that age have simply less gravitas than older actors (no fault of their own).
-None of the characters (apart from Andy) were interesting.
That’s my review. My favorite film in the franchise (and many others’) is Aliens. And this was the first movie in the franchise in 38 years that featured a(n underpowered) pulse rifle (electronic pulse action as opposed to a traditional firing pin), so that was cool. Here’s hoping to a future movie that actually features the Colonial Marines from 2179 again.
My own ranking would be:
1. Aliens
2. Alien / Alien Romulus joint second
3. Prometheus
————-
4. Aliens Colonial Marines TemplarGFX (on PC, not consoles. The only sequel to Aliens we have and it’s a deep story)
-Alien Covenant (killed the mystery of the Xenomorph and engineers by shrinking the universe)
-Alien 3 (hate this movie for what it did)
-AVP (not as bad now as when it was released, and that’s coming from someone who doesn’t like Predators at all)
-Alien Resurrection (like the Spaceballs of the Alien franchise)
-AVP-R (You can’t see most of this movie because it’s black. Maybe it’s good, I never could see enough
