Alien: Earth TV Series

SPOILER FREE

I just saw the first two episodes of Alien: Earth. It was… OK. Like all the recent Alien movies, the characters do stupid things. The Xenomorphs look very good and are vicious. Some of the other alien species are silly. I didn’t think I’d like the synthetic people storyline, but it was actually pretty interesting. I like the lead female character. The episodes seem long, and there’s a lot of wasted time showing people walking around looking left, right, up, down and being casual like its Sunday in the park instead of being in a life threatening situation. As for production value, it’s right up there with Alien and Aliens. Gore factor is mid level. I’ll keep watching it to see how the story plays out.
How did you get early access?

I have no idea. I had my DVR (YoutubeTV) set up to record the show and when I checked this morning the first 2 episodes were available for viewing.
I just realised Disney are again doing the USA release the day before the rest of the world. Annoying for fans outside of America who wake up to an internet full of spoilers for MCU shows and now possibly Alien Earth for anyone who is a big fan.

I will likely watch at least the first episode tomorrow.

I just realised why have I have little interest in Alien's the franchise anymore. Apart from the discovery/introduction (Aliens1-2) everything else is flawed because the main character is essentially a bug, bug hunt etc.

It's not even a cool monster or a decent protagonist like the Predator character in said movies, essentially they are killable bugs. If you compare the Predator creature, there's at least the interest of their history, home planet, how they live etc...with Aliens it just bugs....again. I don't think I'll even bother watching it.

I could be wrong...but I doubt it..... :lol::lol:

Alien is definitely a formulaic franchise based simply around the shock/horror of the Alien's life cycle

Like it or not, at least Ridley Scott tried to expand on the formula with Prometheus and Covenant by expanding to a wider universe with the engineers etc...

While the end result was definitely lacking, I give him kudos for trying to break outside the box of the franchise

I'd be curious to see how well Alien earth can maintain a series beyond a season or two without running out of ideas that amount to Alien infects people. chests burst, aliens terrorize survivors, rinse and repeat

I kind of see this as more of a limited series that could essentially just be a movie or two worth of material

I'll definitely watch

It just has to tick off the right boxes to be entertaining for an Alien story. It doesn't have to be some oscar winning drama

I put the first two episodes of Alien Earth on my DVR to watch. I'll watch the whole show probably in October with Romulus as I saw they had it on before Alien Earth. Wiki says the show is only 8 episodes.

Without making a big review, the first two episodes are fine. Many TV shows and movies start off fine. The only hints of something being bad in this show so far to me is the kid genius character who reminds me of Lex Luthor in the Batman vs Superman movie. He's close to that level of annoying but bearable so far.

Also, the main character Wendy does something early on, which I said to the screen, please don't do that. But she did. So we'll see how her story arc goes. I didn't catch enough backstory around her friends yet. However, her character is interesting and very similar to a popular Japanese cyberpunk character that had a bad American remake movie. People should know who I'm referencing without spoiling it.

The show has some heavy nostalgia moments. Which many will like. Yet it is attempting something new by also being on Earth. Thus, we need to get to the end to see how it works out. I believe I only watched the teaser trailer. And if they keep the current setting, this show might be a keeper. There is a crazy scene midway in the second episode with some great Alien shots.

The problem with Prometheus is that Ridley Scott didn't stick to the origin of the derelict ship story. Created a silly black goo thing that does whatever the writers want it to do. Then made a terrible sequel that starts off in almost the same way as Prometheus. Which then came very close to ruining the whole series.

I like Prometheus too. It's worth owning. It's a very good B movie in many ways. But after that it's like someone wanted to setup a story that an AI is running Weyland Yutani and their whole goal is to bring an Alien to Earth to wipe out humanity.

I agree with what you said about the “kid genius”. When he’s acting goofy he’s annoying, but then when he gets serious in a scene, you actually do see the evil genius in the character.

I think I know exactly the scene you’re talking about with Wendy!

Opening scene was so good, pulled me in.
Aliens music queues were a nice touch in EP2.
Some of the scenes reminded me of a Haribo gummy commercial- made me chuckle some.
The production design is fantastic.
Still not sure how or if they can tie this in without messing up Alien, but we will see .
I have read it does for Alien what Andor did for Star Wars.

Even though it felt a little slow I am in for this to see where it goes.

Interesting. Hard to get close the excellence of Alien & Aliens and even some of its sequels. Must say the space ships and their interior detail were great. Crazy CEO kid indeed was troublesome at first but his interest in the research mother ship has me expecting improvement in his arc. He certainly handled his competition’s phone call in today’s business response strategy.
Wendy surprised me. Good acting and the “empathy” shown toward her brother, while it may be contrived by Hollywood, came across as extremely genuine on her part. Hope the story stays on the positive theme of the human condition. Not sure about search & rescue mission with all the weapons, but they may have known something about the cargo in advance.

Definitely nailed the look of things

The scenes in the beginning with the crew looked and felt like it was pulled right from ALIEN

Not sure of the time frame between this an ALIEN but if I understand correctly, ALIEN is 2122 and ALIEN Earth is 2 years earlier?

Also that one character looks and has mannerisms so much like Parker that it almost feels like it can't be coincidence?
Of course it could just be a nostalgia thing fitting with the look and having characters that are direct nods to the Nostromo crew
but...and I hope it is not the case and just wild speculation, it seems they are either trying to put in a red herring that maybe Parker was a synth, or at least a "donor body-type/memory" of sorts for one?

Also, for a while I almost forgot I was watching an ALIEN series and felt more like I was watching Blade Runner at times

and per Hawley...
"The thing with Alien is that it’s not just a great monster movie. It’s the story of humanity trapped between its primordial parasitic past and its AI future, and they’re both trying to kill us. So, there’s nowhere to go,"

So far it has my attention and like Romulus, a lot of care is taken in getting the "retro-futuristic technology" look

When they were clearing the apt complex and the party was going on, it felt very blade runner to me.

This.
And there are more than a few visually stunning scenes that are SO Blade Runner-esque I found myself rewatching them just to take it all in. Wow.

Yes, there were a few “please don’t do that” or “don’t let them see you do that” moments that foreshadow bigger things to come. They’ve definitely planted some seeds here!
