Age Of Ultron Charity Day Budget Costume Builds

So, last Halloween, purely by chance, a couple of friends and I ended up dressing up as Batman characters for a night out, and it turned out to be quite fun to have a theme, so I had an idea to do an Avengers themed dress up to coincide with next year’s Age of Ultron release.

It turns out that some friends and I are hoping to dress up as various Marvel characters and hopefully (as I have contacted our local cinema) we can raise money for charity along the way.

As I am going to be responsible for making the majority of the costumes I decided to start this in order to post our progress and hopefully get advice and encouragement, so that I can keep up with things and don’t run out of time.

All the costumes will be on as tight a budget as possible and as I have absolutely no sewing experience, I will be trying to do things as basically as possible (though roping in my friends to help with the needle and thread).

The characters we are hoping to make are:
- Thor – a sleeveless, capeless version of the first film armour
- Captain America – the new Avengers 2 design
- Tony Stark – an armour testing phase look with the arc reactor chest and a hand and maybe one leg
- Black Widow – a general look based off the latest version but simplified
- Hawkeye – the basic all black costume from the first Avengers
- Nick Fury – the smart look with the grey polo jumper from the Winter Soldier promo posters
- Maria Hill – the general Shield uniform
- Scarlet Witch – black dress, small red leather jacket
- Loki – the most complicated of the costumes in my opinion, but a simplified version from the Avengers film (at the moment anyway)

I may also try to rope a couple of others into being Coulson and Pepper Potts too as these should involve very little to build and could compliment the one already there nicely.

Unfortunately as it stands we do not know anyone who would make a good Hulk/Banner or Quicksilver who would like to join in, and although anyone could be Ultron, I think the costume would take a lot of time to make and thus might just prove impossible.

The aim is not for movie accuracy costumes, but for something better than a costume shop costume and recognisable as the characters from the films in order to impress the children that are going to watch the new movie.

Also, here we are last Halloween just in case anyone was curious.




Now, on with the Marvel costumes. Any advice would be hugely appreciated, and I will post back soon.

Right so I had a little time to get started on this recently.



The head of the hammer is from one of the toys (disguise I think), and the handle is a thin childrens wooden broom handle cut down, wrapped in foam and sprayed silver, with brown foam detailing added to it.

Then I started the shield which is made from mount card using the templates available online.



The shield was then sprayed silver with some normal spray paint I had laying around. Sorry about the poor photo quality, my phone camera is terrible but hopefully you can get the idea.

Thank you. The next part is likely to be Cap's helmet or an attempt to make a pattern for some fabric parts. Both of these things worry me so we'll see how it goes.

Here are some more updates on this:

Hawkeye:

The pockets on the trouser legs were originally going to get in the way of the kneepads that I intend to add (as demonstrated by the template I made), so these were unpicked and reattached higher up. The shades and the bow were both picked up cheap from a carboot sale.

Scarlet Witch:

These pieces were both found on Ebay. The jacket is not as red as I would have liked so if anyone knows whether this can be dyed in some way or something to help make it a little brighter then I would love to hear this. Also my girlfriend (who is modelling the outfit here) believes the dress is too "puffy outy" at the bottom so she is keeping her eye out for a better one.

Thus far nearly every piece has cost less than my estimated budget so I am pretty pleased with the progress so far.
