Accurate Superman Movie Costume COMPLETE! Pics up!!

For those interested in a "Dean Cain" screen-used costume version there is one on EBay right now, just do a search for "Superman Costume" and you wll find it.

The "Buy it Now" price is only $12,500.00 !!!
(For that price I think I'll keep my car !)

thanks to some good advice by some excellent people on the board, my old cape was scrapped and seamstress has already cut a new one. We hadn't factored the rise of the shoulder padding into the length of the cape as it rests below the backs of the knees and eclipses the top of the boots. Seamstress wanted this out of her hair by christmas, but it ain't happenin. Patience is the best approach to contructing this most intricate of outfits.
So this would be the new cape (cut for width, not length)

And this is the detail of the 'S' symbol stitched inside the tunic. Notice the pinch back for the larger curves and the conventional stitch for the smaller pieces...
If anybody can screencap the costume scene of the making of Superman II (the part with all the capes) I think it will compare well..

One thing that really has me bothered is what to do about the boots. My plan was simply to buy a pair from Ghostbuster Joseph - They are the most accurate and vital to complete the suit. I have the cash ready but my faith is all but shot as I read yet another thread of complaints from disgruntled board members. What to do...?

Finally, a closeup of the buckle pod. Still my fave part of the suit.

Thanks once again to WackyC..

Hey Chris,

I measured my screen-used cape, and the logo is 9" down from the collar.

I also scanned my logo and will send it to you. It is 10" across the widest points, so you'll be able to scale it from there.

Be sure to let us know how it comes out.

Steve

will do man, i appreciate it.

my cape idea is more of a custom job though, and not a screen accurate one. i have always been a fan of the "big byrne/jurgans" era, where he could wrap his arms in it like a cloak. i am hoping to find a nice red material (mom might be able to help me out on that) to do a sort of custom job. im not a big fan of wool.

it's all up in the air right now, all i have is the torso and some iron on papers

ill know more later on tommorow.

thanks again for the logo, cant wait to get it in!

For anyone who has a screen used cape... What is the yellow symbol made of, lycra or the gabardine? Also, how is it attached and what at the black lines? Screen printed or are they a tight zig-zag stitch? Thanks for the help!

pinder-

I've only seen a yellow emblem made of gabardine and not lycra, but GELForever says otherwise, so I'm guessing either one would be correct, but I'm leaning more towards the lycra which would be why the emblem looks curved. The emblem has the black lines embroidered into the material and I believed that it was embroidered separately and sewn onto the cape later on, but I guess Mantis and MisterFusion can answer that.

misterfusion or Mantis- Can you tell us what the width of the cape is? I saw a real one once, but I never got to measure the exact size unfortunately.

There is a great boot maker in Los Angeles named durans that will make superman boots for you very cheaply. get a spanish interpretur before calling though!

Any more information on this?

I speak some spanish, but I wouldn't have any idea where to look since Los Angeles is so big!

his name is senor durand I believe... He was the original bootmaker for the Superman TV series (Lois and Clark) but sadly passed away some time ago. His shop is still opened and I've heard they've done some Chris Reeve replica boots, but I've yet to see any pictures or find contact information. Anyone knows, please post

Thanks Aeon, I'm interested in Christopher Reeve Boot Replicas
but NOT Boots from "Lois and Clark", those looked terrible!

strange request, but im having trouble figuring out this cape idea i have.

ive never really sewn much, so patterns dont really mean that much to me.

would it be possible for someone to lay thier cape (screen used or not, dont care) out flat and take a pic? id like to figure out how to cut the material.

im not planning on adding the straps in the collar since it wont be a wearable cape, but how to make the thing out of 3 yards of material is sort of confusing.

any shots of the collar/folds of the material would be great too.

thanks guys

I noticed a number of the pics were hosted by Wackychimp, maybe he deleted them to save space.

Anyone have any more information on the Superman Boot-maker?

Hi Chris -

I can email you all the old pix - I think I may well have been taking a lot of Wacky's space.
Worry not about the cape, its my work in progress right now and pictures will follow. Basically the pleats in the shoulders dictate the drape, so it has to be gathered in at least twice each side. The body of the cape can be cut either straight (like mine) or in a semi-circle cheese wedge type shape. Stay tuned.
