A Stylized MAG - A Scratch Build - Almost Complete

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Oh. Purdy. :cool

And I see we're kicking things up a notch with the thread title. :love

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Thanks. And yep, once these soles are done, off come the uppers.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

In the process now of adding more Shoe Goo to the midsole to hopefully blend in the clear part better. I will also correct that error from the last attempt at this when I ended up with texture on the parts that were supposed to be smooth. At the time it didn't bother me because it is the part you walk on, but given how these are turning out, I though I would fix that anyway.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

So with a bit of patience, half tube of Shoe Goo and over a tray of ice, I finally have a set of soles that look half decent (considering the mess they were in after my first attempt at clear soles using Shoe Goo).

attachment.php

They are still not perfect, but on their way to being wearable. I have also sealed the entire midsole in Shoe Goo and smoothed it with the ice to blend it in. Now the clear sole parts don't look like they are just glued on. They are setting up now and I will post more images tonight.

Last stage for these is splatter, but I still have not found the right colour for that.

:eek Loving the shape of the soles there. Did you manage to get that splay like the original Mag. Looks like it.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Looks really good so far! The soles look nice and frosted!

Thanks. I did, but not as much as I would have liked. Mine are almost vertical on the outer sides now and I would have liked just a tad more splay outward. The original sole is quite undercut in comparison, so these look way better and much closer to the real deal. I might take a photo of these against the size 8s later on.

The mistake I made was to glue the outsides first which I did when I faked the EL. I had originally planned to glue the outer parts right to the ground line, but cut them back for some reason when I started bonding them in place. Never mind, done now.

If I had glued the base on first, I would have had a line to work to and could have created a better splay. I actually like the way the inside looks. I also reshaped the soles a bit today and gave the outer edge that slight concave appearance.

Thank you for putting me onto this stuff. The CCCE soles are actually full of air bubbles and that gives them that "frosted" look. It does actually look good and I am glad because I thought that $200 kit was wasted.

I'm on to my 5th tube of Shoe Goo and now that I've worked out how to use the stuff, I feel confident that I could create a similar effect without the expense of the Cold Cast Clear Elastomer that I used.

I also think that I can (when required) retread these shoes using just Shoo Goo and that pyramid mat. One secrete is temperature control where the Shoe Goo heats up as it sets and things warp. The ice keeps the temp low and everything straight.

I am also keen to see what effect the stuff has when placed in a vacuum and see if it can be cast bubble free.

Was that you that gave me the idea to use a syringe to control the flow? If so, a massive thank you. And thanks to that guy on YouTube about the ice cube. That makes such a huge difference to the finish.

Toe to toe with the size US8s so you can see the difference between original sole and my clear sole conversion.

You can see from the red arrows that I have really filled in the dip in the soles.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Here is the latest version of my Heel Cup buck for Vac Forming. Still a bit of sanding to go as there is a lump on one side.

This buck needs to be filled in so I don't have cavities for the plastic to wrap around.

I was going to do a Vac Form pull tonight, until I realized the time :rolleyes

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

And the result :)

attachment.php

Note how thick the wall is. These were made from 3mm grey PVC and heat formed not Vac Formed over the buck. This meas I made a small frame, heated the plastic and then pushed the frame over plastic over the buck. The result is that I got the shape I wanted, plus retained the thickness of the material where my last Vac Formed Heel Cups were less than 1mm at the ends.

I still have some trimming to do, then can glue on my green and white lettering.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

After looking again at all my reference shots, I released I have made these wrong again :facepalm

I hope it not too late to straighten the edges to make them a little more angular like this diagram shows or it be a re-do and I am all out of 3mm PVC :cry

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Why are they wrong?

The extended arm things are too rounded and need to be more angular. Last night I drew on them with a sharpie so I can cut them to shape. I'll post an image later on of the intended cut line and you are welcome to give any feedback. They won't get cut until tomorrow.

The black lines are where I think this part need to be trimmed down to.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Still on the Heel Cup...

And after a lot of trimming, this is where I am up to on this part.

Originally I was to cut the profile to be much more angular like the pen lines show [previous post]. I could not bring myself to do that today. I just like the curves :$

Note that I have made the part with a slight extension over the back of the sole to give that lower profile look rather than cut the rubber away.

As for the window in the side, I originally cut three small slots and they looked really hi-tech. When I placed the two part side by side, I noticed that one set of slots was on a different angle to the other set and during the course of correcting this, I only made it worse. I then decided that it would be best to cut this out as a single window and add a rear mounted lens.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

Moving on the new Uppers!

I struggled for months on how to make the uppers. So after watching several YouTube videos on shoe making, I felt comfortable enough to have a go at making a LAST [the name given to the form used to make the pattern of the shoe] using masking tape and my own shoes.

Here is a Mini Tutorial on how to convert a 3D shape into a 2D pattern.

Step 1. Making The LAST.

attachment.php

You need to run tape down the centre line and the inside seem. You want these because when you cut the tape off, they will be your edge reference points. After you have laid a few strips down, go hard covering the rest of the shoe.

Step 2. Laying Out The Pattern.

attachment.php

After carefully cutting the tape, I carefully peeled the tape off to shoe to form this odd shape which I stuck to paper. I then used black a Sharpie to trace the shape which will be my rough pattern.

Step 3. Finalizing The Pattern.

From here I will be able to cut the pattern, trace it onto thick card stock and make the few modifications [height of collar, width of lace section and toe shape] before I start cutting any fabric.

I am also hoping that I can reverse the pattern to make the Left shoe and not have to repeat this process.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

It's awesome that you made patterns.
Thanks :) I'll update them to include the higher collar and draw them in SketchUp so that they can be scaled to any size and then share them for those that want them for their own scratch build.

What was interesting was the shape the actual shoe went when it was taped. The profile was neat. I wish the shoe looked that way without the tape. Hopefully, my canvas version will look better :)

Re: A Stylized MAG - New Uppers Page 9

UPDATE:

attachment.php

Does this qualify as a PEP?

This is the tape form made from the shoe itself and was the base for getting the proportions correct on the design below. What I wanted to avoid was the design being based on a three piece construction [as others have done] when the actual shoe uppers are just two. Even though this in only masking tape on paper, the pattern form fits my foot quite well and toe flattens out quite nice. Once transferred to cloth, this should look quite good.

attachment.php

The designs are not quite finalized but give a pretty good indication as to how these will look. As is, they are about 1.5" taller than the K-MAG the pattern was originally taken from. Once the cuff goes on, they should be about 2" taller which is the height I was after from the beginning of this thread.

Re: A Stylized MAG - A Build From The Ground Up Pg 7

And a digitized version :)

Later I will print, fold and tape it to see how it looks.
