Minor Updates!

Here are some pictures of the 3D printed faceplate and jaw. I forgot to take pictures before adding body filler, but these show the items pre-sanding. The mind-reading headset is the original 3D printed piece, but I will have images up soon of the remaining pieces of the helmet prior to applying body filler.

And, this is a proof-of-concept combination of mechanisms that will be incorporated into the back of the calf. Requiring only two small servos, I am able to recreate the movements seen in the movie, and keep it all contained within a very compact area: Upgraded Boot Mechanism Proof-of-Concept

I think he uses a Replicator (maybe around $2k?) more with all the bells and whistles..

not sure if does BOTH ABS or PLA plastics?..


Software is up to you on what has the best learning curve and cost for your needs..

xl97 is correct - I USED a Replicator 2, and it uses PLA plastic. It was $2000. However, since purchasing it, my printer (along with everyone else's that was purchased from Makerbot) has been riddled with issues and has been more of a headache than anything else. I know early adopters often face these kinds of challenged, but Makerbot has essentially told me that they are out of ideas on how to fix the issues, and won't provide a refund or a replacement machine. SO, I'd recommend you find another option.

Thanks man! Yeah - it's great for figuring out the space requirements of the mechanisms and they provide an excellent reference for me to build my 3D models around.

carvewright is about the same price but cuts away the object, you can use wood or foam..seems they are not going anywhere and keep upgrading. They are adding a spindle option now. I think if you have seen other Ironman build threads here you have seen what can be done. Its the person behind the tool that makes the item that really counts. It shows in the finish item.
These are just tools to speed up the process.. but you have to do a lot of prep work to make any thing work and come out right.

what they said/why they are finally giving up?

So (as of now).. you are currently the owner of a $2k paperweight? (no working at all? or just nor 'right' in some area?)


I mentioned before the local makerspace here..

They not only have the same machine.. but about 20-30 variants of 3D printers too! (even a Stratasys..mendel/mega max's....chinese knock-offs..etc)


might be worth joining the mailing list? and getting some help?

(or perhaps you can 'drop' it off for some help on your 'trip'?)

Hey J,

The latest issue is the continual build-up of material on the underside of the extruder. After swapping out all of the components for new ones, the first print afterwards had the EXACT same problem. Now, it's not that my printer has never worked - I had about 4 weeks of uninterrupted success (with a few shoddy prints interspersed throughout), but it did work, even completing a 13+ hour print. It failed catastrophically on a 45 minute print...

Anyways, Makerbot has no idea what would be causing it, and their stance now is that they are out of solutions/ideas, and won't refund me or provide me with a new unit. So, not very impressed at all.

My trip had to be postponed as my secret endeavor also had to be postponed. But, I'm happy to bring it down when I do make the trip. It's not doing me any good here!

PHOTOS! I picked up my first prints of many of the models you've been long waiting to see!

There are a number of minor adjustments I'll need to make to have them reprinted before I can actually hook these up to my circuits, but overall I'm pretty happy with how they have turned out.
