37 1/2 inch (1/2 studio scale) TOS Battlestar Galactica scratchbuild #2

Mike what shade of gray and red did you use on your BSG?

There is so many shades of gray and red I would like to stay as close to the one you use or do you know what the original studio ones where used?

Clarence

The problem with the original miniatures color is that it's been exposed to dust, dirt, smoke, coffee, etc for 30 years. I would stick to the lightest grey you can find. I like the color of Tamiya fine primer myself.

Thank You Robiwon will shop for the lightest gray I can find..any idea on what color red that I should use on the side, top and nose of the BSG?

Clarence

I'd go for a brick or caboose red. The decals in the Moebius kit are way too bright. A darker red would be better IMHO.

Here is what i used.

Paint is a combo of XF-2 white, JN Grey, and a little sky gray, all tamiya. 4 bottles white, 1.5 bottles JN gray and about 1/4 sky gray.

I mixed all in a large bottle from US plastics, then added about 45% Iso alcohol so that is was nice and thin (91% iso). 1 batch of the above was enough to do a full galactica with some to spare.

It was lighter than the studio model appears, leaves a little room for pigments and drybrushing, but still had a bit of that concrete gray tint to it.

I found that some pigments and dry brushing of the details is important in this scale, the greeblies do not benefit from studio lighting and the shadows that are created by the details on the larger model. You don't want a heavily weathered ship, just enough to make the details pop.

In other news the new head mold is done and i am back up and running kits again. Hope to be all caught up very soon, I am ready for a break from these so i really want to try to get the all shipped before Jerseyfest.

I will keep casting everything else while i make the new head mold, so once the new mold is done i should be able to catch up quickly, provided that mold does not fail after only 2 or 3 heads like this one.

Sorry guys.

Hi Mike.... been trying to contact you for a few months now regarding buying one of your BSG kits.... Hate to be a pest, but I've had two ppl tell me now to do just that.....

If you haven't put me on the waiting list yet, could you please do so at the next edit......

Thanks,
Wolf

Righto, will do. Can't do much about Shapeways pricing though! For ref, here's a dome I worked up today, similar to Nick's. In the best material this would be $15, in second-best it's $12. Shapeways charges $20 shipping, flat rate, for whatever you order. So I'd suggest waiting till I've done a more worth while mess of pieces.

Hi Mike,
Moonbus here (new guy to the thread, a very nice job by the way) sent you a pm on the kit looking forward to hearing from you. I hope you had a great time at Jerseyfest.
Take care, Tim

I just got around to unwrapping my kit. Wow. It's big and impressive. It'll sure take some time just to clean up all the parts before I even try to get it assembled. I'm sooo excited.... and so is my cat! I'll keep the small pieces in the bag for now.

Hey guys, I'm just trying to get the parts together so I can begin tackling this behemoth. Can anyone tell me where I can get some of the 'T stock' that was used by Robiwon on the landing bay end caps?

There should have been some in your kit. If not, it's just regular Plastruct T-Strip available at your hobby shop. Mike mentions elsewhere in this thread the actual size. If not, I can let you know when I get home from work today.
