3 foot Star Destroyer WIP/Update 2/11/13

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Continuing to lay out the bottom detailing. This includes the trim that runs down the center of the hull from the main hangar bay to the rear. I also put a temporary dome in place to fill the hole. It will be replaced later.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

With the main trim panels done, I began cutting out the meticulous and painstakingly time consuming detail that layers the panels! What a pain in the :love!!

The finalized dome is in place and detailed. A coat of primer makes it look a little better. I intend to add the line pattern detailing after the dome is painted. I will lightly scribe some of the deeper lines and pencil in the rest.

I don't know for sure but maybe someone can verify this for me: In the book "Sculpting a galaxy" by Lorne Peterson, it shows a couple close-up pics of the underside of the avenger. Most of the paneking lines are scribed but some look as if they have been penciled on. Has anyone noticed? Can any one confirm?
Thanks

Honestly, my favorite movie of the whole Star wars saga is Empire. So I've been goin with that. I buils the snowspeeder, now Im building the Star destroyer, and I have started a tie bomber on the side. I have the vader wings, and cockpit shield, but just have to find the rest. However I plan on breaking the empire formula and building the shuttle tydirium next.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Here I added a little extra detailing to the main hangar bay, namely the second landing bay.
This is another area of the model I wish I had done better.:cry

Sorry the pics aren't good.
Also note the new crane claw. I don't like this one eighter because it is too big....Third times the charm right?

I'm in the Empire camp with everyone else; it has that surreal quality from my formative years that put it over the top. But yeah, despite the knocks it gets from the detractors, I really like ROTJ as well. Not the subject of the modeling forum at all, but for me it has to do with the Emperor, Vader, the Royal Guards, and yes, the shuttle Tydirium. 1983 is etched in my brain indelibly for some reason...:lol

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Next I began mapping out the superstructure on the top, but before that I scribed the surface panels and added some more detailing with small squares of styrene, as well as some kitbashed detail.

I know I have some pics of the super structure frame as I was building it, but some reason I cannot find them right now. So we jump ahead a little bit in these pics where the detailing is already being applied over the frame.

The detail looks a little chunky at this stage, but it is just a base layer of detail I layed down at first. I will go back and add more detail later.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

From here came the meticulous task of layering detail over the entire superstructure. It was actually a lot of fun finding objects of all kinds to use as detailing. Its interesting to see what you can get to work with a little creativity. Among some of the more obscure items I used were the head of a disposable shaving razor, and the locking threads of a zip lock bag! With a little primer and paint, they look like a working oiece of machinery!:lol

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Looks awesome! I'm like you when it comes to the 'found objects' approach to model making... whatever works and looks good. On my SD build, I am constantly using cans of compressed air to clear dust off the model. On those cans, there's a plastic tab that has to be pulled off like a soda can to unlock the trigger. When detailing the side of my superstructure, I found a spot for that plastic tab where it fits great and blends in like any other kit piece.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Thats cool! I drive my wife nuts, because we'll be out some where n I'll find little pieces of plastic, or whatever else on the ground and I'll pick it up and put it in my pocket to take home and glue it on somethin!:lol
I work at a grocery store, and I was walking down the isle with laundry detergent, and there is a brand of wash soap that has a plastic cap covering the main unscrewable cap. i took one off of one of the containers because it is the perfect size for the dome cap of the studio tie bomber! I was blown away. So i guess you know what I'll be buildin next!:love

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Not to get too off topic, but I can relate... my wife came home with a new bird feeder one day. No sooner did she take it out of the box that a big piece of it became the top of my Escape Pod:

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Great close-up shots. I love the details you have added. Can't wait to see more.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Next I began mapping out the bridge and neck section. I built a crude frame for the bridge using styrene and reinforced it with popcicle sticks. I did not want it to be too heavy.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Laying in the base detail for the neck section using kitbashed pieces.

Re: Studio Scale 3 foot Star Destroyer WIP beginning

Laying in the bridge detail using kitbashed pieces and other found objects.

The bridge looks a little crooked in these pics because it is not fully alligned and attatched.
