2001 Astronaut helmet

BTW people always say the helmets from "Titan Find" (1985, aka "Creature") were originally from 2001 or 2010, but clearly the Titan helmets are a new sculpt.

Based on the 2001 design to be sure, but then so are the "Mission To Mars" helmets.

Thanks for all the screen grabs guys .I haven't found ant clear shots of The "Titan find "helms so Im happy to finally get to see them and they do look like a new sculpt My info comes from a source who says this info comes from Greg Jein who I guess worked on the films.I have no direct contact with him as of yet but hope to someday soon.all I do know is the helm I had in my hands had all the inaccuracy's found on Jiens helm from 2010.
see pix
here is s rare shot showing Bowman wearing the 2010 helmet which Is not included in the remake for some reason they show the suits and packs but never the replica helmets and bowman is helm less the entire time.maybe the inaccuracy's in the rear plug-in packs were too distracting and bumped from being included.
just a theory

I would think that the helmets were not used so that there would be little chance the audience would not recognize Bowman. I can't imagine any filmmaker (except perhaps Kubrick himself) rejecting them based on details that only the likes of us would notice. ;)

that may be true but in 2001 the blue suit and helmet are left on the hanger pod bay at the end of the movie and in 2010 the suit is still there but the helmet is missing.so the continuity people knew to keep the suit intact and show it a few times but left out the helmet? Dave Bowman grabbed a green helmet from the airlock which you can see when he blasts from the pod, he deactivates HAL in this helm then switches back into his matching tor red helmet to go through the gate. Now at the time this movie was out it was a well known fact that this movie was an Icon of fiction and popular culture and lots of people would be looking for mistakes or checking for accuracy in the sets, costumes and continuity and they did have a supply of helmets with a nasty flaw in their design.....
just a theory2 cents

Yeah, the redressed blue suit (with helmet) from 2010 was later used in BABYLON 5, so it's not like there wasn't a helmet made...

It's in the first season ep "Babylon Squared." Here's the only pic I could find very quickly, which is about as useful as a pic of the grassy knoll in November 1963, I know, but at least it shows gross details and that the helmet does look a little wobbly.

I had been looking for stills of that blue suit from Bab5, but haven't found anything but a very tiny image.

Apparently it was used in the episodes "Babylon Squared" and "War Without End"?

And yeah I forgot about those new images from the most recent DVD. The behind the scenes stuff especially. Gold.

This pic is reproduced full page in "2001 Filming The Future" I think... I'll have to see if I can get a scan. I love Kubrick's cigarette on Kier's shoulder. :lol

Here's a somewhat disturbing one. :lol

There's a good chance that the blue suit used in B5 was created by Global Effects. As I understand it, they made 2-3 suits for a proposed IBM(?) commercial that was never made as they did not aquire the rights to use them.

First let me say I'm extremely cautious about using anything from 2010 to reference the same items in 2001... unlike "2001", "2010" is "only a movie" and let's just say mistakes were made. :lol

Regards the two "2010" pics posted above, are we sure the helmet with Einstein's head in it, is from 2010? The Dullea 2010 pic seems to show a much flatter visor, and the "chin" is flatter too.

On the other hand the "plug in computer packs" are a lot deeper on the Einstein and Dullea 2010 pics than they are on the original 2001.

Note the black border on the side of the visor of the Einstein helmet tho... it's narrow at the bottom. In the Dullea 2010 pic, it's wide at the bottom.

Naw, the B5 suit is the 2010 suit; check out the Global Effects helmet, with the lights:

and I'm pretty sure I saw the IBM ad, with two guys walking around. Will have to look around for that. :)

OK, my bad. The IBM commercial got made but was pulled because they didn't have the rights. A few years ago the RPF had a prop party that was held at Global Effects. I can't find my photos from then, but I know I took some pictures of those blue suits. I remember the owner of GE relating the story of the how they came to make the 2001 style suits for the IBM. I guess I got a few details wrong. It looks like they made a new blue suit on B5 to go with the 2010 helmet. Their suit does not seem have the same ribbing details.

That Einstein helmet seems really really good... but there are differences! Such as the too deep computer packs and the neck ring.

Pics of the Lunar suit. Note headphones (not used on Discovery).

This is definitely an exciting project for many.

I would only be interested if all the aluminum parts are actually machined aluminum. No resin please!

The B5 costumers actually had to make two suits because the first one went missing from Western Costume. They needed two suits because the incident being portrayed from an earlier episode, where it was just Sinclair in the scene, was being retold to include Sheridan.

So, the first suit was used by Sinclair years before the scene was shot with the two of them-- and went missing in the interim. The two new replacement suits had to match the suit that was used in the original scene, which was a huge headache for the wardrobe department. I'm not sure where they got the helmets for the newer scene.

As for the Lunar version of the suit, it does not have the arm panel (like Bowman has on his suit) and there is a cap, much like that used with the Apollo moon suit, being worn in addition to the headphones.
