2001 Astronaut helmet

I would never have noticed this without this thread... but it looks like that Einstein helmet has the same too-deep backpanel computer pack flaw as the Global Effects helmet...?

Any chance the Einstein helmet IS a copy made by Global Effects? :lol

Odd that they'd get everything right and still mist THAT detail. Or maybe it's somebody's "tell". :rolleyes

Good points Cardboard. I also note that the story goes that Bowman's red suit was repainted silver (!) for the lunar scenes (filmed after the Discovery sets wrapped) because they needed an extra suit.

That would mean somebody is walking around TMA-1 with an arm console, but I haven't step-framed the scenes to try to find it.

In any case I guess that's what the silver suit that's been on display is... Bowman's red suit painted silver (as per the "restoration project" site).

Any chance the Einstein helmet is a REAL 2001 helmet only f-d up by somebody who "restored" it? :unsure

the helmet with the "Einstein" is from Jiens collection he had it displayed with the original screen used silver (repainted Bowmans Red suit) EVA suit from 2001.my guess is the helmet is his piece from 2010 along with the thruster packs he did for the movie.the helmet has the same rear plug-pack arrangement as seen in my picture .post#83
my main correction to the helmet I had for study was to accurately re-sculpt the plug pack area, the helmet from 2010 had an exaggerated front pack taking up the space between the top and bottom which matched the end of the clear visor.all the plug in packs are the same size all the way around on the 2001 they did not stretch toward the ends so this space was filled and contoured.
again see the photo Im not sure Im getting the idea across.
I have the areas marked on both helms showing the main difference ,why they changed this I have no idea.

They probably changed because the sculptor who did it for 2010 didn't know. or maybe didn't care, what the function of that black area was supposed to be.

They are intended to be interchangeable plug-in modules. In 2001 they all have the same recangular shape.

For 2010 that whole black area is resculpted to follow the curve of the helmet. So each section is no longer the same size and shape, you could not swap modules. But the sculptor probably didn't know that and just assumed that they were vents or something.

Note also the antenna on the back of the white helmet. There's something similar on the Discovery helmets but it's hard to see. You can make it out in the shot above where Bowman is working on the antenna mounting.

the metal detail looks to be an antenna I have a close up shot of that.
below is the helmet I worked on showing the modules sized and duplicated all along the rear of the helm as in 2001.these will be connected with magnets right now they are attached with Velcro.
the shape of this helmet is quite bizarre and until you see it in 3-d its hard to capture the amount of contouring going on ,IMOP it would be very difficult to duplicate this helm just with photo reference.I had thought I knew what this thing would look like after years of research but when I actually had it in my hands it had lots of surprises that jive with every picture I had cataloged.the size and shape ,with the one glaring exception, were all dead on.

One thing that came to light when I was at the opening of the Frankfurt exhibit is that all 6 suits made for the film started out as the silver version. The whole TMA-1 sequence was filmed before any of the Discovery stuff. 5 of the suits (and their helmets) were painted-- red, yellow, blue, green and violet (which we never saw). This left only one suit and helmet in the original Lunar scheme (silver suit, white helmet).

After all the first unit stuff was shot, they moved on to the stunt work and whichever suit fit the stuntman got painted for both Bowman and Poole. During the editing of the film, Bob McCall delivered the artwork for the posters, including a scene he envisioned-- the survey team on an overlook of Clavius Base. Kubrick decided that needed to be shot and added to the Aries landing sequence, so they painted three suits back to silver and shot the scene. It is the only scene in the film shot at MGM in Los Angeles. You can see at least one of the guys has the arm panel on his suit. It is unclear if all the suits wound up in Los Angeles or if only 3 wound up there.

The suit that is on display in the exhibit, which is still traveling, is silver, but also shows bits of green, red and yellow. It is interesting to note that only 3 of the suits have survived the film-- Greg Jein's, Kubrick's and the one that sold on ebay last year. And they are all silver.

I went through my photos of the exhibit, but could not find one of the silver suit. As I recall, it was behind plexiglass and the reflections were really bad, so I didn't bother. But, here's a shot most of you have not seen--

This was one of the production stills on display, which for some odd reason didn't have any reflections on it! And here's a shot of the red helmet--

WOW! thanks scott.
I take it you were a guest of the exhibit showing off one of your glorious Discovery models?:thumbsup
are you going to wonderfest this year?have a table yet?
loved seeing your pieces a few years ago.
did you notice the rear thruster pack on display at the show?
I think one of the shots I had post was from that exhibit.
thanks for the great photos.
Cheers!

The pick-up shot that uses the repainted Discovery suit is this one (you can clearly see the IBM keypad on the left sleeve of the leftmost astronaut)

Note the Snoopy cap on the guy in the background here.

I was a guest of the Exhibition and got to speak extensively with Kubrick's wife and daughter and Jan Harlan. They were very complimentary about the Discovery model and said how glad they were that one was available as without it, everyone would feel something was missing.

I will be at Wonderfest, if American Airlines doesn't cancel the flight like they did last year. I'll have two tables and they will be FULL!

I had seen a few shots of a Discovery hung at the exhibition and thought it was one of yours .
Thats about as good as it gets.
hope to see you at Wonderfest
hows the Aries coming?
if you have any castings ready I would be interested in picking one up at at the show

This is another little bit of reference... this pic was part of a set of prop and miniatures photos that appeared on Ebay a couple of years ago. I have no idea where they came from or who won them. Or if there are more copies out there.

But this one of the Bowman helmet, appears to be the helmet in its original pristine filming condition. It seems to be sitting on an angled block, on an array of glass shelves.

I rectified it as best I can, but there isn't much information in the degraded ebay photo. If somebody could find an original print, this could yield some useful stuff.

The photos that were sold on ebay were shot at the Kubrick Exhibition, including this one of the red helmet. If you go back to where I posted the photo of the helmet, you'll see it is sitting on the same base.

I am really enjoying all the tidbits which are being revealed on this iconic piece.

It would be great if a nice reproduction does get developed. To all the artisans on this board, I am in awe of your capabilities!

Scott - I was in your studio while you were finishing the Discovery Model. It was very impressive.

Now - where did it end up again???

I couldn't tell you exactly, because I don't know which one you saw. The first one went on display at the Tech Museum in San Jose. That one was made of test parts and after its showing at the Tech, it was broken down into components and became parts used on 3 others (exactly why is a long story). Those 3 went to various owners in Los Angeles. The one you refer to is one of those. I moved after delivering the last of those three.

Since then, there are 3 other owners in the US, 1 in Germany, 1 in New Zealand, 1 in Greece, 2 in the UK. There was also one sold on ebay, but not by me. It was built by one of the guys who helped make the masters and he later sold it (he had to move into smaller digs). There is also one I traded. So, there are quite a few of them out there!
