Yes, well, that was my point.
HAL doesn't lie to Bowman, nor is he wrong about the great risk involved in trying to get back aboard the Discovery sans helmet. The odds of survival are against Bowman, but Bowman gets lucky (in that special way that brave movie heroes tend to get lucky, i.e. by creating his own luck).
Not that Bowman had much to lose in this case, given his predicament.
