1408 Dolphin Hotel Paper Props Thread!

I couldn't resist, but I emailed Barnaby Gorton, and enquired if he would ever consider doing prints of the 1408 stuff, signed, or even a set.

I hope he will give it some consideration! Will let ye know if he eventually replies. I thought it would be worth contacting him to scope out the possibility!

On a side note, seems he does a lot of work for Gordon Ramsey, and mentioned in one of his books.

Sounds like it's the boat paintings only. I was surprised to see a reply, but grateful he took the time to reply, and even offer some hope!

Hi______
Thank you for your kind words.
I might somewhere have a digital file of the boat paintings.
Regards Barnaby

In my email, I explained how there's a bunch of us that like identifying various pieces seen in a wide range of films, and have probably spent more time than we'd admit in attempts to tracking down / hunting / identifying items.

Either way, it's great to know there's a possible source of a good quality print of the screen used one.

On a side note, either the old TV show or the recent movie of Chronicles of Narnia, also had a scene of a schooner painting at sea, and then becomes stormy and rough seas too.

I have no doubt that your well written e-mail is what motivated him to reply.
My question about the paintings is did he do them all but only has the boat file or did he just paint the boat one?
Good idea you had emailing him.

If he replies again, I'll delve further into asking him questions about the paintings. Would even be great to find if there were any particular pieces that was an inspiration, or what the production brief for the painting was. Would be fascinating to hear.

These look great!

I also have the postcards, the key card, the mini mint chocolates, the maps, the menus and the door number done, but I'll post them when I do the frame for the map.

Hi. I did my own version of this post card, but never posted my final attempt at the bottom right picture. I'll post it here in case you can use it.

I never could resolve the table thing....but print small enough and it might not be so bad.

This is great news! Can't wait to see where this goes.

Here are my replicas so far.

These were printed on plain paper, then laminated with transparent vinyl; I used 5mm thick PVC cut to 23 x 23 mm, which was dressed with gold metallic vinyl:

Used 3mm thick PVC sheet dressed in gold metallic vinyl with cut out numbers from glossy black vinyl:

These are redressed cards with the logo printed on glossy white vinyl (the back is blank - as per the iCollector website, but I might also do a version done by MAKE BELIEVE here ==> 1408 Dolphin Hotel Paper Props Thread!):

Printed on plain paper then laminated with laminating pouch (I will use a thicker paper next time):

The postcards:

The minibar and phone lists were printed on plain paper; the holder was made by me from a thin transparent PVC sheet, but because it has a weak structure, I added a bit of support to the back:

And last, but not the least, the Dolphin Hotel evacuation maps:

These were printed on plain paper, then glued together with double sided adhesive tape, then laminated with a laminating pouch:

The frame was made with 3mm thick PVC cut as 7mm wide strips, then I glued these to both sides of the map with double sided adhesive tape. The inner edge was colored with a black sharpie, while the rest was dressed with matte black vinyl:

Today I also did the 'obligatory' search for the postcard photos. I started with the Reform Club in London, but with no luck.

Then I tried with the Marriott Hotel from New York with some promising results, which led me to a site called TripAdvisor (NEW YORK MARRIOTT EAST SIDE: See 2,246 Hotel Reviews, Price Comparison and 704 Photos (New York City) - Tripadvisor), where clients of the hotels post their photos. Then I stumbled upon this photo... and I almost fell off my chair:

Almost a perfect match, but shot at a lower level. There are at least 3-4 images from the same level, but the ultimate winner (while not a 100% match, as we need a wider shot) is this photo:

And a comparison of both photos:

And here is the closest photo I found of the hotel outside (sadly no hi-res):

Last Saturday night I was watching Casino Royale on my favorite TV channel and in the action scene after Le Chiffre was threatened by creditors who were ultimately killed by Bond, in the hotel hallway I saw something and it was an instant recognition:
Dolphin Hotel Paintings in Casino Royale.png

The lower right painting might be one of the two non visible paintings on the other side of the elevators in 1408.

And speaking of the paintings, here's a hi-res screencap which shows some kind of frame between the painting and the black background:

The wooden frame looks identical to the ones used in Casino Royale and is a strong evidence that these were repurposed props.

Just for fun, I did a new version of the Dolphin Hotel postcard using hi-res images found on the internet:

The image from the Reform Club is not the correct one, and as Ceebrupt already said in the 1408 Postcard thread, the photo taken for the original postcard is not in the main saloon, but is in the other saloon, right after you take the stairs up to the left:
