11th Doctor's sonic screwdriver at DragonCon?

Neat to see QMx displaying protos of the Eleven and Four era sonics now- I guess they mean to get all the major variations of the sonic out there?

That looks great! I wonder if their aim is to make all of the Sonics? Anyone see if the 8th Dr version was there as that's the next one I want to get.

What's it made from? Copper, leather & plastics? Also any idea what that button does on the bottom?

Does anyone know how many versions of the 11th Drs Sonic the Production team have. Ie static, flip open. Or due to Matt Smith being s bit accident prone is there just several versions of the one Sonic prop that does everything?

Like any production, I'm certain there's many different ones.

In one episode's scene (Prisoner Zero, on the village green) one sonic was a stunt (no moving parts) version, then one was rigged to 'explode', then there was an exploded/melted one, all for just the one scene. :)

I think he meant the new version with the green LED. And it's a good question. I just re-watched The Beast Below today, and during the scene inside the Star Whale's mouth, I noticed something funny: The Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver had a white LED, for use as a torch. He also never extended it in that scene, so perhaps that was a static prop.

I spent a long time at the QMx booth, perusing the sonic screwdrivers! I had no real opinion of the props or the company before this, being primarily a classic Who fan, but I have to say these are spectacular. Had I had any doubts, the level of knowledge and interest displayed by the extremely nice designer to whom I spoke would have put them to rest. There's clearly a lot of care being put into them, and they have done some staggeringly exhaustive research. He even shared little anecdotes about the filming props he got to play with and what the BBC has done to each of them, lol.

They were actually asking for opinions on the Eleventh Doctor model... did people prefer with actual studio-style activation button or without? They had one of each on display. I'm not sure the answers would actually influence their decisions, but it was nice to see that degree of interest toward the customers' preferences.

As for the classic model, it was assuredly not one of Russ's. There were a number of small differences in both measurement and technique (which the fellow was careful to point out to me, lol) that demonstrated the all-new-ness of this version. Not that they're not very similar - Russ's eye for detail really is exceptional - but they are noticeably different.

The activation motion was startingly fluid. I almost wish it were a little less fluid, as I like weighty props and personally prefer the heft of Russ's, but for those who've been wanting one that's super-easy to activate, this one'll do it!

All in all, I came away terribly impressed with the craftsmanship. And the Farnsworth was fun to play with as well! :D

There isn't a master classic sonic. It was stolen years ago from JNTs desk.

Although the original is gone I would be willing to bet that QMX have been given access to the BBC reference photos of the original. I know for sure that most of the time prop departments take reference photos of the major props and keep them on file in case they ever need to reproduce them. There is no reason the BBC would be any different. It would be really cool to get a look at those :eek.

I'm hoping QMx avoids any production setbacks with these items. I know myself and most other DW fans are really going to appreciate accurate replicas of these...

Prydonian- did they indicate what original source material that had to use for the Baker/Classic Sonic? Have to wonder what they have to go off of since the original prop is long lost.

Am I the only one that thinks the emitter bulb on the prototype is completely the wrong color, and possibly not transparent enough? :confused

Nope, I noticed it immediately actually. I didn't say anything immediately because I thought the rest looked ok, but the more I look at the emitter bulb the more it bothers me lol.

You can quite clearly see the difference with these two pics:

Yep, and here's more views of the actual prop...

the difference was immediately apparent to me.

That really is an epic fail. The lower half looks fine but the middle extending section is totally off. It seems like they couldn't figure out how to engineer it properly and adapted the CO toy mechanism or just winged it and hoped we don't notice.
