1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

How in the hell are you keeping from damaging this thing every time you move it :confused

I could carry a futon mattress into the next room and leave two holes in my wall :lol

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Your next job is in the car trade (lots of pinstripes in that hobby;))...I'm always afraid to see those beautiful panels being scratched and bumped and...I'll stop thinking about it now, it gives me nightmares. Eager to see the reaction at GMX!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Day 1: it was primarily setup... whew... we had 3 accidents. One knob and convex lens from the instrument cluster popped off. And I inadvertently, because it was already cracked and thinking it was the lower part of the door frame, broke off the part of the door frame where the door track mounts. But we're fixing it this morning... grrrrr... WHAT A BLAST SO FAR! :)

Assembly begins...

Hi Gang,

GMX Day 2:

After an early morning repair job on the door frame, everything was fixed. It was non-stop from 9:30am until 9:45pm when I left... Enjoy!

Love the look of the temporary bar lights. Once you get all of the permanent bar lights and housings installed, plus other lighting details, it's really going to kick things up to a whole new level of greatness.

Hi K,

As I was setting up the Pit early Friday morning... this guy walks into our room and starts chatting with a few of our folks and we started chatting about the project. He tells me how impressed he was with the build. We shook hands, I thanked him for the kind words and I jumped back to work. Someone walked up to me said "... do you know who that was?" "... he looked familiar but...". "... that was Timothy Zahn!" "... oh really? ok, yeah sure I whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!"

Chris Griffin- Whaaaat? - YouTube

I've chatted with both him and his wife several times during the show. What a wonderful bunch of folks. Very down to earth and both are very funny too! I'm hoping they will both sign the instrument panel before we all depart the show.

I was thinking I should have you pinstrip my car but then I noticed that you can only do squares!:p

Hi P,

Thanks! Those were the first photos of the canopy put back together after all the painting and trim added - I was a little nervous they wouldn't fit back together! We did run into a few snags but everything worked out.

Yeah... I could do lots of pinstripe squares within larger and smaller ones next to them...

Hey T,

We had NO IDEA what effect we were getting with the lights until I took a pic for someone. When I looked at the image I was blown away! The next thing I knew I became the quasi-photographer trying to get those perfect pics for all the guests. It was a lot of fun!

There has been a lot of conversation about the lights these last few days - lots of ideas, concepts, directions, etc... Any way we look at it, we know that part of the project is quickly approaching and we're all excited about it. I also want to now include sound(s) when different toggle switches are activated...

Day 3: Stay Tuned!

So you know, My girlfriend is not a willing part of any of my prop work. Having said that, this morning, she yells at me across the living room, 'ISN'T A FRIEND OF YOURS MAKING A MILLENIUM FALCON?!?!?
It was on the front page of Reddit earlier. :)
Nicely done Greg. :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Just a quick weekend overview of the GMX show and to help catch you guys/gals up on MANY of the side conversations Chris Lee and I had re: the next phases of the build. Just like the Makers Faire a few months back, it was non-stop. From the moment we opened the doors to our room to the moment they were closed... it was a steady stream. Every now and then the crowd would thin and then there were times we were packed. It was only during panel discussions we were able to get a break. I spent most of the 3 days manning the door letting people in and out of the Pit to have their photos taken. There was one woman who refused to leave the Pit - she was in heaven! That felt pretty good! I even ran into the woman helped me with the arch padding - she said she was impressed! Lots of great folks and good times!

OK... the good stuff! Chris Lee and I chatted several times during the show and tossed out MANY ideas on how to continue to raise the bar not only on the Pit but also the overall project. As for the pit... we discussed several lighting and sound options. We both agreed that each panel will have the same flashing pattern as seen in the all the movies. This flash pattern would then be interrupted by the misc toggle switches. Some of the toggles will have MF specific sounds related when they are activated. These will be represented by small white dots on each toggle. We even had the idea that it one switch was turned on all the LEDs to include the bar lights would turn a BRIGHT RED! We finally approached and figured out the bar light housing (we think) so I will be tackling that very soon!

Sound: There will be several speakers placed through out the Pit. We're planning of course the engines (low grumble), going into hyperspace, misc sounds, etc... It's going to be HUGE task but after seeing the images of the temp light bars... we were pumped!

Although there is no immediate deadline, work continues! I will be finishing the trim work on the canopy and then of course LOTS of touchup work (filling, sanding, filling sanding, painting, etc). And then we can finally add the canopy greeblies - piping, hoses, etc... Chris is going to vacuform the overhead black "lids" for the ESB panels - that gets us one step closer to the finish line. Finally... after hauling those STUPID platforms... there has to be a better solution. Those things are terribly heavy...

Hope you all enjoyed the pics. More importantrly, we wished all of you could have joined us! What's the next show? We're not sure. Dallas? Chattanooga? Chris, Leah, me and the gang are discussing different options...

Stay Tuned! :)

Hi J,

Thanks so much! I'm committed to seeing this through till the end. :) GMX was a lot of fun. As exhausted as I am, I want to get back out in the garage jump back into it! But I need to figure out how to reduce the weight of those platforms. I think I added too many support beams under the 3/4" ply... It was a killer getting those out of the trailer!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

How about building the support platform out of a grid of squared aluminum tubing, That should provide strength and reduce the weight considerably.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

HMMMM... I still have the 3/4" ply. I'm assuming that just bolts into the tubing?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

That is the way I would tackle it. Just make a grid structure of aluminum then bolt the plywood to it. Definitely lighter than wood studs and square tubing would be very strong.
