1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

You can display it. Just slap an "Under Construction" sign on it. People will understand! That's what I used to do at car shows with my rusty dented GTO.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi L,

Thanks for the guidance! I have both the cloth and the mat and I think the cloth would work much better - easier to form. I like your idea about stapling the cloth into place before the resin. I still need to add more surface area for either the glass or a wood panel to adhere.

Tonight... rent a Uhaul and dismantle...

Yup the woven cloth is the way to go :thumbsup

Good luck on the transport! Too bad you don't have some type of of light freighter available for the move.... :lol

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hey Snow,

Other than this being a logistical nightmare... not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest... ;)

I WAS going to suggest that the cockpit be disassembled into front and rear sections... But I took a look at the pictures you've been posting, and I see it hasn't been built for that.

So, really, all I can suggest for you to do is rent a small box truck with it's own lift gate, add so internal bracing to the cockpit, shrinkwrap the whole thing to add a bit of rigidity, and use a generous supply of cargo straps. Not TOO tight.
(Also, drive like a granny)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Not much to report but the complete breakdown... :)

I did however attach the vertical gauges

And the rest...

UGH... I'm going to attempt to pack these up tomorrow morning... - the platforms are going in a separate truck

After I finished taking everything apart... I had completely forgot about the console...

Next Update: Pics from the show! Stay Tuned!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Whatever will you do with yourself for a month? For that matter, what will I do with MYself?... Watching your progress has become a daily ritual for me. Ah, well... Have fun at the show.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Have fun SK! Get some rest if you can. Wish I could go hang out with you there. Good luck!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I'm betting SK is listening to Disco Star Wars on the journey... :D Have a good'n!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang...

Here we go...

Wish everybody was able to attend - would love to see all you guys! :) OH! The cockpit MIGHT be coming back on Sunday. Not sure yet. But I I still have a new throttle body and two console instrument panels to create... "...it's not over yet..."

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Holy crap. I may have to drive to Nashville tonight from Dallas just to see this. Incredible. I only wish my Han Solo costume was done. Amazing work!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang...

I had another thought... After the show, I could just fiberglass this area instead of removing the tape and hoping to trace the pattern - glassing is easy. I just don't know how the glass would adhere directly to wood - especially the edges. And there would be LOTS of sanding and Bondo involved... Anybody have direct experience with glassing to a wood structure?

I have glassed to wood with no problem SK. Just glassed right to it no other prep. I did it with the mother mold bracing for my HIC body cast.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I JUST got home after an AMAZING show at the Science Center! What a turn out! There was SteamPunk, R2s, robots and so much more... it was amazing! First and most importantly... I want to thank the entire gang of folks that helped set up and tear down both the cockpit and quad - you guys and gals are the best! Thank you!

I didn't get as many pics as I had hoped - the Faire was jam packed and I we had to stay close to the MF! Both Chris Lee and Leah were interviewed several times during the day... It was a zoo! But what fun!

Enjoy!

Leah during the shows set up - It had poured ALL night and we were lucky it stopped just a few hours before the show

We wound up having to rope off the cockpit during the show - Chris Lee in the middle with bandana

The door pads were painted at the show just a day earlier - they turned out great! And what a difference it is having a group of wonderful and willing folks to help put together the project!

This was my favorite! The R2 builders got their Astromechs to pose in front of the MF. It was amazing watching the train of R2s happily roll along one after the other

This drew a HUGE crowd... there most have been 30-50 folks all gathered to take pics of the R2s and the MF build - it was cool! :)

Whew... what a day! We also met many folks from the RPF and the FullScaleFalcon sites - thanks for stopping by guys! :)

Thanks again to everybody - Chris, Leah, Scott, Gregg, JT, and everybody else... THANK YOU for an amazing DAY!

As always... More to Follow!

EDIT: NOT A SINGLE ACCIDENT! No broken toggles :)

So cool brother! Can't wait to hear more details. Glad it went off with out the usually "Falcon" break downs ;)

Man... Wish I could have been there. So you'll come out to central Canada comic con at the end of October to make up for it, right? ;)

Hi B,

Actually, the front nose platform does separate from the arched panel platform - so you are correct - there is a front and rear section. Chris and I were chatting during a break in the show and we discussed building a steel frame around the "pit" to make it easier for transport. Once everybody saw it in person they realized "holy moly" this is a monster to put together!

I did exactly that - rented a trailer and packed it up. I had a buddy from work transport the platforms separately. It sucks when you're forced to drive 55 mph in a 70 zone where everybody passing you is doing 80-85... But everything worked out!

Don't want to overhype it, but this is the best thing anyone has ever done. :)

Hi C,

Thank you so much. Those are very kind words indeed! Stay tuned for more updates! :)

Whatever will you do with yourself for a month? For that matter, what will I do with MYself?... Watching your progress has become a daily ritual for me. Ah, well... Have fun at the show.

Not to worry.... A bulk of the build came back with me. The Science Center didn't have the manpower to watch the "pit" full time. Although even they admitted it was a massive draw - they didn't want to take any chances - which certainly understand. Both Chris and I had to rip a few little kids out of the "pit" for jumping up and down and grabbing everything in sight...

So... what's next? The new instrument panels, throttle housing and of course the canopy is still a go! Hang on!

Have a great time at the show. We'll miss you.

It was a total blast! We have more photos and several vids coming taken from friends... Wish everybody could have been there! :)

Have fun SK! Get some rest if you can. Wish I could go hang out with you there. Good luck!

Hey DC,

Thanks. I am wiped out! Have you ever been so sore/tired you couldn't fall asleep? That's how I was last night after finally crawling into bed... I just laid there in pain... lol

You would have loved the R2 guys and several of the tech booths. It was SO MUCH fun! :)

Well yeah... My 5th of Beethoven from Saturday Night Fever on 8 Track Tape wore out... ;)

Holy crap. I may have to drive to Nashville tonight from Dallas just to see this. Incredible. I only wish my Han Solo costume was done. Amazing work!

Hi Z,

Thanks so much! You would have been right at home sitting in the "pit" :)

Hey DC,

Believe it or not, I actually had some minor success (so far) with the tape. Before the show I removed the tape and now I have the two patterns to cut. I'll probably get to those next weekend. If all else fails, I'll dig through the supplies and start glassing away! :)

- - - Updated - - -

So cool brother! Can't wait to hear more details. Glad it went off with out the usually "Falcon" break downs ;)

I have to admit I was VERY nervous if not neurotic about setting the "pit" in the parking lot. Turned out the dang pavement was more level than my garage! LOL It went together so fast and so smooth there were ZERO issues. Having a group of willing and able folks to help didn't hurt (thanks again guys and gals). I was stunned... Nothing went wrong... :)

Awesome, wish I coulda been there.

Hey S,

I can't tell you how people asked about the 3D drawings and how the whole project came together. You would have had a blast! :)

Man... Wish I could have been there. So you'll come out to central Canada comic con at the end of October to make up for it, right? ;)

If I could do it... I absolutely would go :)

Simply stunning!!!!! Fantastic photos!!!

Hi CJ,

Thanks! There are MORE photos, vids and interviews coming within the next few days. :)
