Faust! Great to see your fabulous build again! You still da man.
SK, I am enjoying the heck out of your builds.
Fuzzal, those are nice renders you found, though a “niceified” look of the upper cannon on the “5-footer” as it exists today…more or less.
SK, since your build shows it, and Fuzzal, since your found renders also shows it, I would mention that the gaps in the top and bottom of the aft sections aren’t really there (IF SK is striving for filming model accuracy). Sure, the gap seen in the “5-footer’s” upper cannon top aft section currently exists, but it is an artifact of destructive modification made to the cannon after ANH to add wiring and lights. It seems the modelers patched the top gap up rather hastily with a flat rectangular bridging piece, failing to cover it up all the way to the rear. I have yet to see a post-ANH “5-footer” pic that shows the bottom aft section. But from what I can see, I suspect it was necessary to remove that bottom aft section so the wires could pass up from the turret. Interestingly, you have recreated the originally horizontally split aft section to be a smaller version of itself within the gapped/vertically split section. Hey, it looks cool, but as I said, I don’t know what your accuracy goal is, and you DID ask for references.
Speaking of references, other than potential pix I have never seen, perhaps one of the best references is a preliminary sketch from ILM drawn to show the cannon from behind at sort of a “3/4” view. One or more of the various publications has this sketch in it, though it/they escapes me at the moment…the original Chronicles book, maybe?
SK, again, I don’t know what kind of accuracy you’re going for compared to the filming models, but I would also mention that the section just ahead of the aft section has a bit much length to it. On the “5-footer”, it is just a thick plate. Of course changing it would throw off aft section proportions. Clearly, as you have built it, anyone would definitely know what it is, and I still think it looks cool. Keep up the good work.
