Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

The back arch of the canopy is DONE! I get to repeat this process MANY more times...

I cut the arch and then align all the panels together
20130914_165056_zps0ab56c75.jpg

I then quickly created a guide
20130914_165109_zpsca42674f.jpg

Using the guide I traced an outline for the top part of the arch

20130914_165722_zps0fe8a739.jpg

I then cut each panel and attached to the cockpit

Here you can see a clear distinction between the round canopy and the angles of the cockpit panels

These areas will be removed when the upper side panels are installed

More overlap

I then removed these eye sores

This helps with the overall look of the cockpit

Arch completed

And this is where we are
20130914_183129_zps56afaefa.jpg

I am absolutely exhausted... but I'm going to try to paint the door padding while there is still light

Hang Tight!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Well... the padding got their first coat of primer.

The daylight held on just enough for me to get these done
20130914_185916_zps675465ff.jpg

I'm hoping the texture will cover up the tape marks and then I can paint / weather to match

Oh Yeah... I forgot... The canopy is done. Looks good, right? ;)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Too much information!

Good luck with the door.

I was to always share... ;)

The door frame was cut down by 1/2 in. I think that was the culprit. Now there's a 1/4 in gap on one side but I'm not going to worry at this point. I'm really happy with where things are.

I get the same thing from eating turkey. There's something really pungent in turkey that my body can't break down. It all comes out when I pee, and stinks up the bathroom.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

SK, I was thinking about your warping issues and think I have a less than perfect solution.

While you can't keep the wood from warping (and when the weather cools it may well return to it's original shape), have you thought about putting thin weather striping between your panels where they join? You will have some small, visible gaps, but the stripping would allow compression and expansion while keeping a tight seal and give support when you bolt everything together.

Just my 2 cents, I'm sure you'll power your way through this most recent challenge.

I've thought about everything... padding, shims, spacers, etc... I think it is what it is. The good news that the entire build will be at the Science Center in Nashville, TN for the next several weeks. So it's going to sit in one position for quite a while in a controlled environment. I'm hoping this will help everything settle. It will be nice to have my garage back... but it will be REALLY weird not having her around.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

How do you possibly manage to not break off any of those toggles?!?!?! That's amazing in itself.

PURE LUCK! I'm very upset with myself with this build. All the panels and canopy should have been done before a single coat of paint was added let along pin stripes, toggle or greeblies... However, with that said I honestly didn't expect to build the entire cockpit, but at a certain point I should have backed away from the fun stuff and got the structure finished before anything. So... when I'm moving those panels around from room to room, taking them on and off time and again... I am extra extra careful!

You could say your Falcon gives you about as much trouble as the real Falcon gave Han.

I actually caught myself getting two panel mixed up "... No No No... this one goes here, that one goes there... Right?!"

Yeah, and he doesn't have a Wookie

I do have my two furry friends. Bu they would rather lay around and watch. But I love um anyway

All? How about a few? ;)

I think I like Mike J's idea of a hamburger (that would be one big hamburger)

Are all those holes in the panels destined to be toggle switches?

Hi Y,

All the remaining holes are for the flat top LEDs. Unfortunately, I won't be getting to them anytime soon.

That canopy looks spaceworthy. I trust it.

I don't see anything wrong with it at all...

Major thumbs up. Looks like a very productive day.

Thank you, Sir. It was Go Go Go... I was beat by the end of the day

Your a building animal. Love it!

Hi C,

Thanks! I have less than a week to go before I get to take the entire thing apart again and haul up to Nashville, TN for the Makers Faire. It's going to be a very interesting few days...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I applied the final layer of light grey to the quad barrels and the upper tubes. I need to add a few minor details, weather the tubes and this project is complete!

Waiting for the barrel tips to dry

Tubes all finished

Don't like the foam padding - I'm going to change to black

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

While the barrel tips were drying I had the idea to use high gloss coat in certain areas...

I sprayed the gloss coat into a cup and then brush it on. Other areas I just sprayed away...

The quad is finished!

To differentiate each barrel - they got their own distinctive marking

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Looks great! Have you thought about putting scorch marks around the end of each barrel? (I'd assume they get pretty hot from use). You could also spray paint the inside of the barrel either metallic or black to better hide the "PVC-nature" of its construction.

Hey SB,

I thought about doing that exact thing. HMMMMM...
