I like what you did with that part!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Believe it or not... I have been plugging away trying to get the panels to fit. The warping is MASSIVE! However, I also think the casters (wheels) under the platforms are causing a lot of flex and creating even more problems. I'm going to create some shims tomorrow to see if I can correct the issue - it's VERY frustrating. The door frame, which once fit perfectly, no longer fits at all...

Let's start with some good news... I finished weathering the back of the quad

I added a little more gunk here and there...
20130913_164641_zpsd70312e4.jpg

I had to remove part of the MDF cover I created for the bar lights - its was getting in the way of the adjacent light
20130913_160911_zpsd6aab8e1.jpg

Nice and snug - up until now, ALL the panels fit perfectly
20130913_160903_zpsbf57eb03.jpg

It was smooth sailing until....
20130913_201201_zps35883c73.jpg

Alone, the panels fit fine until I tried to fit the door frame. I then removed the panels, installed the door frame first and install each panel around the door frame also with no luck...

From the back - even with ALL the panels loosely fitted - there is just too much warping

This is where we are

It's safe to say at this point that the garage floor isn't exactly level! I might be forced to remove ALL the panels from the main platform and start from the beginning. I think that might do the trick. I may also purchase a few more casters to help even the load on the platform... I don't know, but I don't want to spend time working on such a trivial task. But it's this very task that makes or breaks everything fitting... ugh... I'll hit that first thing tomorrow morning,

Well... Onto the door frame padding!

Stay Tuned!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Sounds like that Alabama humidity is really screwing everything up.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... the shapes for the door padding have been created! I'm going to blast them with a coat of the black primer tomorrow morning. I'm hoping the texture will cover the tape and the minor imperfections in the foam core. Then I will paint with a rubber spray paint then a tan spray... then weather... whew...

I cut ALL the padding shapes from foam core

Marked them up and then created boxes

Until they were all finished

I taped up all the edges using simple masking tape. I'm hoping the primer will cover everything

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

I'm sitting here eating a can of tuna desperately trying to find a solution to this warping issue... If I can't find an answer... all will be for nothing! GRRRRRR

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Sofaking do you consider using spray to get that spatter/dot pattern that adds randomness on top of the weathering process? Imitating the dot/spatter that we see in the SS models.

you have no idea!

Hi A,

I just ran my finger across the brush tips to get the splatter/spatter effect. Unless we're talking two different things?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... I don't know what happened, how it happened or when it happened but the door frame is just not fitting the way it should/used to... I have no choice to but to cut down the frame and hope for the best... ugh... I should be working on the canopy right now! GRRRRRR ;)

OK... So... Just like the original I drilled and created counter sunk holes to attach the door frame to side the sides of the back panels. I HOPED this would have solved the warping issue. As a result, I wound up having to reinforce ALL the panels with extra screws because the frame had warped SO BAD it was cracking the glue and pulling braids out... But, it does look cool! Trying to stay positive!

Here are the problem areas. To the right and left of the top of the door frame you can see how off the measurement is. I'm going to take the worst side and just cut off the problem area - let's hope this works!

Han's Side

Chewie Side
20130914_120418_zps497cc287.jpg

They are about 1/8 - 1/4 in off. I'm just going to cut the top off and again... hope for the best.

ALSO... This changes the length of the door itself which means I now have to remove MORE material from the door

Don't leave us hanging...

...How was the tuna?

LMAO! Thanks. I needed that. The Tuna was wonderful... Starkist has come along way over the last few years especially with their easy opening pouches. The best part. I enjoy the Tuna over and over every time I burp... or pee...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

SK, I was thinking about your warping issues and think I have a less than perfect solution.

While you can't keep the wood from warping (and when the weather cools it may well return to it's original shape), have you thought about putting thin weather striping between your panels where they join? You will have some small, visible gaps, but the stripping would allow compression and expansion while keeping a tight seal and give support when you bolt everything together.

Just my 2 cents, I'm sure you'll power your way through this most recent challenge.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... I cut the top of the door frame off and the spacing issue is NOW resolved! YEAH!!!! But there is now a HUGE gap... BOOOO... But I can fill it with foam padding and all will be fine... YEAH!!!! But I have fallen way behind... BOOOOO...

I really don't know what happened and why or which panel(s) warped... The good news, I can FINALLY work on the canopy

Looking from behind at the door frame - Han's side

Chewie's side - note the gap - ugh...

Han's side from the front
20130914_140848_zps967e7648.jpg

Chewie's side from the front - I'll just fill it with black foam tape and the door padding will cover it up so all is well

Slowly getting back to moving forward

I'm beat... But it's a fantastic day! Sunny, low 80s and low humidity. Doesn't get any better!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

How do you possibly manage to not break off any of those toggles?!?!?! That's amazing in itself.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

You could say your Falcon gives you about as much trouble as the real Falcon gave Han.
