Second Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver

No, it is the same Ever Ready model used by Troughton. After reading this forum and finding out what model he used I did a lot of digging around the internet to try and find one. I'm not surprised nobody here seems to have managed to find one, as far as I can tell this one might have been the only one for sale on the entire internet. Found it on ebid, bought it for £2. I haven't put a battery in yet so I don't know if it works, but I will soon post more photos from different angles and measurements and stuff in case it helps any of you lot who are making your own.

Gotcha. I've seen a few originals, none for sale though. It's rarity is why I thought you may have reproduced it.

Measurements would be great! Do you own a set of digital calipers?

Wow, thank you very much for the detailed information and photos! It's very much appreciated :D

No need to thank me, if it wasn't for this forum I might not have found the right penlight in the first place. The least I can do is help those who can't find one to make their own as accurate as possible.

Still, there are too many people out there that hold onto info so they can be "special" and you've just shown you're not one of those people. Thank you very much for being part of our community, BreadleyBear!

THANK you! That is awesome. I don't know which is better- the measurements or the pictures.

Earlier this week, I took quick measurements off the battery in the pic, and threw together a facsimile with some available materials at work. Namely, 12mm SS tubing, and some random blue Delrin. It's actually much more purple-ish than in these pics (EDIT- I managed to get a couple more accurate pics without the flash). Mine is 12mm in dia on the body, with 14-15mm at the front of the blue section. About 152mm long altogether. Not bad for a human.;)

I just need to find a good bulb to epoxy into the front. Kinda stuck with what I found.

As long as it looks good next to my CO Sonic collection, I'm happy!:lol Maybe someday I'll get lucky and find a penlite. I did a google search and STILL somehow missed that one on ebids!:lol

Not that anyone wants to see my pics after THOSE, but........

Huge thanks for sharing that! While I totally understand and appreciate people choosing to keep information to themselves for various reasons it's awesome that I can now cobble one of these together as a placeholder until someone does a run. :)

BreadleyBear: It's really great that you could find that one on the webz and thanks for sharing the measurements.
If I could use tools properly and would have experience with this stuff I would absolutely make one, but without those I'm now frustrated because I can't find a somewhat accurate looking pen light (with cheap international shipping).
My best bet is this one I think, my only problem is that I don't know if I could remove the red paint (it's aluminum) and how could I do it ? (as I said, I have basically no experience).

I also tought about cutting this one's rounded tip, but I don't know if i could do something about the bulb so it wouldn't stick out (I think removing the red paint from the previous one would be much simpler)

Or any other ideas maybe?

Do you have a lathe? If so, why don't you do it on the lathe or ask someone here to do it? The penlight is a very easy object to make on the lathe. Then kill a pen (springs) and print a nice cab online (or cannibalize another pen). You should manage 20 dollar if you can drill out of a aluminium tube (or someone does it for you cheaply).

Another option. Watch out for the penlight on the internet - someday you could catch it. Funny: I saw the penlight-offer on ebid, but were to slow - chances are good, you could be the faster one next time.

I will stick with the second option (but thanks for the advices) because currently I don't want to spend too much on a penlight (yeah, $20 for a penlight now would be a bit much). My frustration with the penlights on the internet is that they are almost good except for some minor details (like the rounded tip).

But a rounded tip is very very very easy to fix ;)

Don't worry. :)

Indeed: If you can get hands on a lathe, I would recommend to practise. As a Who-Fan (see Screwdrivers) a lathe may be the number one tool.

I can't thank BreadleyBear enough. It is very generous to take and share these dimensions. Now time to model it in SolidWorks. If I get it looking alright, I'll post!!

Don't laugh!!! I modelled this in SolidWorks last night. It's accurate to the numbers given in this thread. I'm pretty happy with it, but the clip is going to need some messing with. The clip has a lot of intersecting curves that are tricky, but it's a start.

At this point it's all one peice for a "stunt" version, but I am considering breaking it into peices. The stunt version could be printed in Stainless Steel at Shapeways. With a little paint it would be passable, but I really wont to break it in peices to put an LED in it (I know it was a conventional bulb, but LEDs are more rugged, last longer, and require less power).

Take a look and let me know wht you think. And a special thanks to BreadleyBear for generously providing the dimensions!!!!

You've done quite a nice job with that model!

I believe Solidworks has a sheet metal function (though I've never used said function)... Would that be appropriate to use for modeling the clip?
