DeAgostini 1\18 scale X Wing

First.. lol ordered mine yesterday.. I had fun with the falcon. I still wish it was the slave 1 instead. But I’ll still enjoy it... I’m going to wait a few months before starting it to see what kind of after market stuff people start to make.

Good news. I'm going to wait until they have one of their sales, where you save on shipping or some other kind of discount. This will also give Deag a chance to weed out any problems in the model, like they did with the MF.

Over 1.600 $ when finished plus S&H. Impressive.

Is it the photography or does the nose look a bit short? I guess it is the photography because it looks more like a toy. Pro-builders may turn this into a beauty though. :)

Not available in the UK yet. I'm going to wait until I see people starting to build theirs. I'm still a little on the fence with this one and after Deagostinis awful customer service with the Falcon I'm dubious about dealing with them again.

Some CAD images of the model rendered

That's some pretty impressive engineering. The frame structure offers the possibility to display it in many ways with panels on and off, during maintenance, wrecked, on the assembly line etc.

There's no way that is worth $1500!!......while the sub framing stuff looks cool and the detail is nice, in finished mode it looks like an off scale toy......Just my OP...;)

There is also a picture showing the wing mechanics (from the German DeAgostini forum).
In my opinion, it has some disadvantages:
- The wings are opening too far (at least for my taste and according to the reference pictures I have).
- Due to the play involved, each wing will have a slightly different / its own angle.
- The distances between fuselage and engines seem to be to far.
- Each wing has its own swiveling pivot / center. When opening the wings, the inside surfaces of (e.g.) left upper and right lower wing are no longer in the same plane.

To try to explain what I mean with my last point, I have added pictures with some lines:
- Yellow lines are there to show the mechanics.
- Blue lines are where the inner surfaces of the wings should be (in my opinion).
- Red lines are where the inner surfaces of the wings will be.

Pictures:
- DeAgostini wing mechanics.
- DeAgostini wing mechanics with reference lines.
- Red 5 filming model with reference lines for the inner surfaces of the wings as where they are on Red 5.
- Red 5 filming model with inserted Picture of DeAgostini wing mechanics.
- Red 5 as it would have looked like with the deagostinies wing mechanics.

With the wider opening angle of the DeAgostini model, the difference looks even more extreme. If you look at the promotion pictures, you can see it. I think, that when seeing the finished model in 3D, it will be even more prominent.
To modify the wing mechanics will be a lot of work. Making a Diorama with closed wings still needs re work for the distances between fuselage and engines.
So I do not know if I will go for it.

Don't forget that those pictures were a 3D interpretation of the model and an exploded view. How the actual model wing mechanics work in reality will be different. Deag did a pretty decent job with the MF, so I'm thinking they will continue with this project. Again, they picked an iconic vehicle that some (most) modellers are very persnickety with accuracy and details. The overall shape must be accurate, and most definitely the wings have to sit right or else the modelling community will surely voice their displeasure and if they do, sales will falter. That's why I will be waiting until the model is well into production before ordering.

I don't get it either. How can it be worth as much money as the Falcon. How in the world are they going to stretch a subscription out over 2 years? Out of all the star wars ships, the x-wing has relative few parts.

It's hard to be tempted to purchase this when you can get a Salzo studio scale for a fraction of the cost.

Not to totally defend Deagostini but there are a lot of under the panels details that will stretch the build out. As far a Accuracy to the common folk that actually see it in person will never know and will be easily impressed. I have a few hard core Star Wars friends that look at my Millennium falcon and can never find the extreme details I added or the lil thing that I was able to learn about from hours and hours of studying to get right. I think in the right hands this can be a very impressive display. Totally agree that it is a bit steep in price and wish to god they would have done the slave 1 instead!! Totally a missed opportunity in my book.
