Hi Gang,
Time for an awesome update! At least I think it is...
Saturday was a total bust a thunder storms rolled through the area and caused some power outages. But I doubled down on Sunday!
Work continues on the 1:4 scale cockpit. Lots of redesigning and recutting as I try to mirror the full scale version
I then jumped over to this little project. I spent several hours cutting up 1/2" insulation foam board into these simple 10 x 15.25" shapes
Glued several of them together
Cut these smaller strips
Cut this round over template
Making sure the edges look good
Adhered everything together and hand sanded / rounded over the edges smooth
Covered with Mod Podge to seal and harden the foam - we have a new test corridor pad!
4 down
UGH - dang adhesive!
Looking good
The plan is to cover the pads with the Mod Podge and Shop Towels (for texture)
The towels are torn to remove any and all visible sharp clean lines
Covered - you can already see the texture forming
Its tough to get the entire pad covered in one pass. Once the glue/sealer (Podge) dries you make a second pass to cover those areas missed
Tear up a small piece of towel
Load the area with adhesive and brush/tap into place
Done - the torn edges simply blend in with the rest of the texture(s)
Painted black before adding the familiar tan colors - save that for later!
Time to knock out these pads!
Four layers per pad
Adhered together
Cutting the edge pieces - 6 pieces per pad
Spray adhesive worked much better than the Elmers - and its was faster!
Once everything was in place it was time to route these hard edges!
Instead of hand sanding, I broke out the router with a 1" round-over bit and... Well... it was a MESS!
Each pad routed very different from the other - that's a good thing. The holes add character
I then spent an hour or so using the palm sander to smooth and take down then uneven foam edges
I wish I could easily hide all those layer lines - thus the shop towels
Still need to add the Podge and towels but the hard part is over!
That looks so cool!
Still need to sand and round over a few missed edges
Naturally I have to space them out
And this is where we are!
More to Follow!
