MCL34N's Amazing Spidey- 1 Year Later (New Pics Bottom of 29)

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Costume (UPDATED 6-13)(Pic Heavy)

Any suggestions before applying the puffy to a un-sewn suit?
Do I need consider zipper placement and sewing?
Or would you just recommend puffing the whole print and worry about that later?

Hey I just wanted to know, how did you make the puff paint? And what do you use to get the honey comb texture? By hand or a differnt tool?

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Costume (UPDATED 6-13)(Pic Heavy)

Hi MCL34N,

As you recommended, I have not let past dealings hinder the project and have pulled out the provebial finger and finally completed the mask pattern. Probably, wouldn't have bothered to continue on with the mask if it weren't for your strong words of incouragement, so thanks dude!

I do have one question about sizing the masks, if you'd be so kind. Roughly what dimensions do you print out your pattern, L x W, on average. Since I will be making a few I'm looking for a good size for display purposes, so I won't be resizing the masks. I was thinking about 20" high by 33" wide for the print scaling, but if you've got a tried and tested scaling I'd be stoked. Just one thing less to go wrong. Thanks dude!

Thanks MCL34N

So I've always wanted a movie quality style spiderman mask and thanks to MCL34N's tips, tricks, and pics from the first version, I've finally manned up and made one for myself. The lenses are a bit different but I used what I could find to get close enough haha.

Eureka!!!
Friends! Great news. Put your octagon nightmares at ease.
This is on a spiderman t-shirt I bought to practice on.
120% easier with the needle. Your meth will have to wait...:loll

WOWOWOW! Brilliant!! This is what I've been looking for in this costume!!

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Costume (UPDATED 6-13)(Pic Heavy)

Guys its a million times easier. But in between sessions the needle dries out so you need another. I tried rinsing with hot water but I grew impatient. I am in such a good mood knowing that a novice can do this now. I am also happy I was able to contribute!

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Costume (UPDATED 6-13)(Pic Heavy)

Hey everyone! A while back I decided I wanted to tackle the new "Amazing Spiderman" mask and I thought I would post some pics of what I've got so far! I didn't have much of a budget for this project so I knew printing on Lycra was out of the question, so I just decided to go the classic puff-paint route! I started from scratch, realizing that the old Spidey pattern wouldn't work for this mask, since all of the webbing detail is different. Anyway, here are some progress pics, each with a brief description above it. Enjoy!

I started with a quick material test, just to see how difficult this would be. It wasn't too bad, so I decided to press on. (The colors are way too bright here, so I had to change them a bit later on.)

431702_902346812779_18812244_39003803_367854089_n.jpg

I then started work on my pattern. For those of you who have seen my work, you'll notice that I'm very fond of tin foil :lol

419368_902346857689_18812244_39003804_1587008264_n.jpg

I then flattened the tin-foil out in the shape of my rough patterns.

417464_902346902599_18812244_39003805_543390550_n.jpg

My rough tin-foil pattern refined a bit-

423371_902346937529_18812244_39003806_510060880_n.jpg

Then put onto fabric for the initial mask-

420943_902346967469_18812244_39003807_474181699_n.jpg

The first mask all sewn together. As you can see, way too loose. That's the point of a first draft though!

418493_902347002399_18812244_39003808_1414418005_n.jpg

So I then pinned the mask up to get a better shape, along with the first draft of a lens template-

64192_902349133129_18812244_39003817_1766857523_n.jpg

For the lens material itself, I realized my front gate had a similar texture (Though not a honeycomb pattern)

423010_902350290809_18812244_39003823_881796412_n.jpg

So, I set it up to have a silicone mold made-

427129_902347042319_18812244_39003809_218364715_n.jpg

Then put liquid plastic into the silicone mold to make my lens-

426994_904521414859_18812244_39010572_1378149830_n.jpg

A more refined mask with a rough lens on it-

432197_902347087229_18812244_39003810_643783041_n.jpg

I then started to sketch out the web pattern-

417165_902347112179_18812244_39003811_1097383522_n.jpg

The finalized web pattern-

425056_902347142119_18812244_39003812_1930342777_n.jpg

Annd then taken apart and laid out flat-

404917_902347172059_18812244_39003813_369410617_n.jpg

Then I made a template for the shading and brick pattern-

429171_902537844949_18812244_39005198_245636859_n.jpg

The first piece shaded-

417493_904521320049_18812244_39010568_1298066699_n.jpg

Annd the rest. I went a bit heavy with the shadows, and didn't really get some of the highlights I wanted, such as the cheek bones. I blame the fact that I was painting outside at night with practically no light.

425231_904521349989_18812244_39010569_259288366_n.jpg

Ready to lay the Honeycomb texture. Note my hastily made light table. Like I said, practically no budget.

425845_904521384919_18812244_39010570_907048148_n.jpg

The lenses refined and ready for some gold-

425799_904521434819_18812244_39010573_1156831868_n.jpg

The honeycomb laid on the face piece. Ready for webbing!

426436_904521459769_18812244_39010574_1681881155_n.jpg

The frames for the lenses being cast with liquid plastic-

428334_904934257519_18812244_39012443_1475507762_n.jpg

The lenses painted gold-

428022_904934267499_18812244_39012444_1167265937_n.jpg

Annnd the finished face piece, all ready to be sewn-

420047_904934297439_18812244_39012445_1869715961_n.jpg

The refined frames ready to be molded-

417119_905500971819_18812244_39016963_1441150519_n.jpg

Wearing the sewn up mask! Now all that's left is to lay the webbing to hide the seams, and glue on the lenses!

430024_905500991779_18812244_39016964_11024329_n.jpg

The mask on a bust so I can lay on the final webbing. I also pinned the lenses on (roughly) with the old foam frame. The final plastic frames aren't as thick.

418099_905501001759_18812244_39016965_140546435_n.jpg

Wearing the mask again, this time with the seams covered up

430421_905592024349_18812244_39017408_2107960674_n.jpg

Aaand with the lenses pinned on. I'm surprised I didn't pin them to my skin.

417519_905592064269_18812244_39017409_200242010_n.jpg

The finished lenses

419314_906824973509_18812244_39022843_122682437_n.jpg

The lenses glued on. They don't sit perfectly on the mask, but if you have any experience with Spidey masks you'll know that without a face shield it's hard to make them look perfect.

419287_906825008439_18812244_39022844_293831657_n.jpg

Then wearing the mask-

429771_906837448509_18812244_39022874_127793813_n.jpg

Again in at a different angle-

429983_906837403599_18812244_39022873_786062863_n.jpg

Thanks for looking! :D

I need help doing mine. Suggestions?

Do you think there's any type of way that could be done to automate or quicken the process? Perhaps if you made an octagon stencil, lined the small stretch of piece up perfectly, and then applied the gloss over that?

You could use octagon "strips" -- a 2-3 inch section of a base strip and has both end-caps ending in full/complete octagons. Then you could have a 1/4 inch half end-cap strip for when you need to end it in half.

But mostly, the stencil strips would be used to fill in the bulk of the middle parts, leaving you to hand-stencil the outer edges to the rims. I imagine it would save a lot of time to stencil out all the middle portions of the costume, only leaving the edges for you to needle-inject.

That was my idea with the needle before you go taking credit for it http://www.therpf.com/f24/my-amazing-spiderman-build-pic-heavy-153063/

Its no big deal but I think we've had enough of that especially in regards to amazing spiderman suits in the past couple of weeks.

Yikes! You have to throw it away after every time? You're going to go through a lot of needles. Someone will think you're a junkie lol.

Ok well since it looks like everyone is trying to puzzle this out I'll share some more of my method. All I did was buy a few bottles of Aleene's Patch & Applique Glue which have the perfect higher detailed nozzle. You'll notice the tip of the dispenser isn't open, they let you cut it yourself for customization. Rather than cutting it though, get an upholstery pin (or any larger than average pin) and stick it in the tip to give it a syringe like accuracy. The good thing about this applicator tip is that its the perfect size to just screw straight onto a bottle of Tulip slick puff paint. For colors I use Deep red, and then a mixture of a little bit of black and navy blue for the blue sections. To get the tip off the tulip bottle you'll notice a slight seam running along the base of the applicator. Just take an exacto knife and run it along this seam. If it still doesn't come off just take some pliers and pull it off. To get steady details, it helps first to secure whatever you're working on to some cardboard or foam core with some staples or pins. Then just take the applicator and run it along the fabric with a steady flow of puff paint coming out. It helps to have a rag or something in hand to clean the end of the nozzle since you are literally just dragging it along the fabric at times. If it ever gets clogged, just screw off the top and clean out the clog in the sink, rather than clearing it with a pin and ignoring it.

Hi MCL3AN, I'm Jerick. I'm BRAND new at this whole costume making and stumbled upon your thread and I think that the suit and mask is AMAZING! I want to start with something small and in need of a pattern. Do you sell them or and you help me out with one simple pattern for the mask ?

Sorry haven't seen your thread. Didn't mean to take credit for your calligraphy syringes. After reading it I do like your navy blue/black mixing technique.

MCL34N. Haha right? I have to give myself shots 4 times a week so I have a lot of these bad boys lying around.

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Costume (UPDATED 6-13)(Pic Heavy)

Hi guy's I'm still rather new to the board, but I've been costuming on my own for a bit, anyway, I've been working on my suit, and practicing as well with the puff paint... I think I've found a similar situation like merc and power regarding flow control, but have been able to keep it in the bottle so you can still steady with one hand and squeeze with the other.

Here are Bottles by Jacquard
img0706dw.jpg

They come with 3 metal tips, stainless steel so can be cleaned easily. the three tips are sized at .5 mm .7mm and .9 mm

here is a pic of the tip on the bottle.
img0715qr.jpg

I didnt try on the lycra yet cause i wanted to show it on black and white so you could see the control and flow i was able to achieve.
img0713bm.jpg

Pretty good for doing that in about 5 minutes. i printed real quick and then moved steady with good control!

Best part... those tips and the bottles were only 8 bucks for the 3 pack!

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Costume (UPDATED 6-13)(Pic Heavy)

Wow haven't seen those. I will check those out.
I like the needles because they help with not having the unexpected puffy paint farts during use.
Your honey combing is perfect so I'll check them out!
