Hey everyone! A while back I decided I wanted to tackle the new "Amazing Spiderman" mask and I thought I would post some pics of what I've got so far! I didn't have much of a budget for this project so I knew printing on Lycra was out of the question, so I just decided to go the classic puff-paint route! I started from scratch, realizing that the old Spidey pattern wouldn't work for this mask, since all of the webbing detail is different. Anyway, here are some progress pics, each with a brief description above it. Enjoy!

I started with a quick material test, just to see how difficult this would be. It wasn't too bad, so I decided to press on. (The colors are way too bright here, so I had to change them a bit later on.)

I then started work on my pattern. For those of you who have seen my work, you'll notice that I'm very fond of tin foil :lol

I then flattened the tin-foil out in the shape of my rough patterns.

My rough tin-foil pattern refined a bit-

Then put onto fabric for the initial mask-

The first mask all sewn together. As you can see, way too loose. That's the point of a first draft though!

So I then pinned the mask up to get a better shape, along with the first draft of a lens template-

For the lens material itself, I realized my front gate had a similar texture (Though not a honeycomb pattern)

So, I set it up to have a silicone mold made-

Then put liquid plastic into the silicone mold to make my lens-

A more refined mask with a rough lens on it-

I then started to sketch out the web pattern-

    The finalized web pattern-

Annd then taken apart and laid out flat-

Then I made a template for the shading and brick pattern-

    The first piece shaded-

Annd the rest. I went a bit heavy with the shadows, and didn't really get some of the highlights I wanted, such as the cheek bones. I blame the fact that I was painting outside at night with practically no light.

Ready to lay the Honeycomb texture. Note my hastily made light table. Like I said, practically no budget.

The lenses refined and ready for some gold-

The honeycomb laid on the face piece. Ready for webbing!

The frames for the lenses being cast with liquid plastic-

    The lenses painted gold-

Annnd the finished face piece, all ready to be sewn-

The refined frames ready to be molded-

Wearing the sewn up mask! Now all that's left is to lay the webbing to hide the seams, and glue on the lenses!

The mask on a bust so I can lay on the final webbing. I also pinned the lenses on (roughly) with the old foam frame. The final plastic frames aren't as thick.

Wearing the mask again, this time with the seams covered up

Aaand with the lenses pinned on. I'm surprised I didn't pin them to my skin.

    The finished lenses

The lenses glued on. They don't sit perfectly on the mask, but if you have any experience with Spidey masks you'll know that without a face shield it's hard to make them look perfect.

    Then wearing the mask-

Again in at a different angle-

    Thanks for looking! :D

MCL34N, you're one crafty dude. Your mask is looking really cool. I especially like your approach on the eyes and eye frames. Is that foam lens frames in the above picture?

Thanks for the kind words guys! And Grave I'm not sure why you can't see the pics, I linked them off of Facebook so that might have something to do with it. I'm making the final lens frame molds and sewing everything up tonight, should have some updated pics by morning. And to answer your question Spidey74, I made the initial lens frame molds with foam frames, but the final ones will be plastic :D

Are you doing that whole honeycomb pattern by hand? I'm a little lost on the tracing board you've set up. Are you using the screen as a stencil and laying fabric paint over the whole piece or hand drawing each shape?

I would also interested in seeing a tutorial on how you did the honey comb pattern.

I'd be curious to know a bit more about the process you're using for the honeycomb and the webbing.

What are you actually using for each? And how are they applied? Is that just an unstretched silk screen for the honeycomb or am I thinking the entirely wrong thing? And how are you giving your webs that recessed look?!

    This looks incredible!

I keep looking at the honeycomb pattern and I am too thick to get it. Please explain in words even I can understand...because this is a totally new concept and I feel like it could be used for so many things...like my Romulan costume!!!

Agreed... Your post seems to hint that you are painting the honeycomb by hand. If that is true, how long did that take you?

Hats off either way, really fantastic work!

Easily one of my favorite spidey masks because it was made completely by hand.

Seriously impressed, and hoping for more info. Great techniques, man!

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Mask- Updated- Wearing the Mask (Pic Heavy)

Thanks everyone! I'm blown away by the positive reaction! I suppose I should answer some of your questions...

First off, yes I just applied all of the brick pattern and webbing by hand using puff paint. The light table was to trace a piece of honeycomb mesh that I got from the fabric store. It did take several hours, but I look around this forum and see all of the hard work people put into sanding and bondoing their pep, and I realized a few hours of painting on fabric isn't so bad :D

As far as the recessed look goes, that comes down to two things. First, the honeycomb pattern was laid on as thick as the webbing, giving it a very even look. Second, you'll notice in the pics of the suit we have that around all of the webbing there is about 1 mil. of bright red. I imagine they designed it this way for some sort of practicality, maybe printing silicone on top of silicone wasn't working. It serves well as an optical illusion though, making it look like the webbing is recessed inside the fabric. Hope that helps!

As far as an update, I rushed the paint job on my lenses and frames and it came out pretty crappy, so I'm casting some new ones. Really glad I made those molds! Should have some pics of the finished mask in a day or two :D

You mean you drew all those little circles of honeycomb by hand?

You're nuts. Dedicated, but nuts. How do control the puff paint? Can you get that fine a line right from the bottle?

Re: MCL34N's WIP Amazing Spidey Mask- Updated- Wearing the Mask (Pic Heavy)

:lol:lol:lol haha yes I did feel a little crazy doing this. The end result made it worth while though.

As far as the puff paint goes, I couldn't find the right color of red so I ended up mixing my own and putting it in a more detailed applicator bottle. I've had a lot of experience with Spidey masks and puff paint. Here's a pic of a symbiote mask I made around the time the 3rd movie came out-

I actually had the idea to do the brick pattern by hand during this project, but decided against it. Finally I decided to give it a shot for this one and it wasn't too bad!

but the black one has a texture too it too?
    is it the fabric?

after seeing this, i wanted to try something similar, just to find out that puff paint is not available in narnia (narnia strikes again!)

Yeah that was just the fabric. I lucked out finding it, it captured the "wet" look of the symbiote really well.

Do you really live in a place called Narnia, or are you being sarcastic?
