the big thing is, I use the same brand of paints and let each coat dry to the point it's no longer tacky.
The wash of grime is a mix of enamel and water that's allowed to sit in the cracks and detail then blotted to lift the drips but not clean it 100%. I'll do that a couple times with various shades of black, sometimes with drops of red or orange added.
