Your Indiana Jones Displays - Lets see 'em

MY response was uncalled for? You come in and insult my perfectly lovely hat and tell me immediately I should go buy some more expensive one. You have no idea which hat I bought or how much it cost. Furthermore, I don't CARE if you don't like it. It's my hat and I bought it to use it. Your response was uncalled for. It was rude as hell. Imagine if I saw a picture of your Maltese Falcon and said, damn Lightning, I thought you'd buy a better looking statue than that! That's ghastly! Here's the one you should have bought at the very least.... If you can't see that, well.... I have nothing else to say to you. There's something called TACT. Learn it. Live it.

Man you have thin skin. All he said was that considering you seem to have worked pretty hard to get more accurate replicas of several other items, you should get a more accurate hat. I don't know what your hat looks like since you deleted it, but he never said it was ugly or horrible or ghastly or anything like that. Lighten up, jeez.

Sure I do, it's the crushable wool felt one with the bound brim. It costs from $30-$60 depending of who you buy from and if it's officially licensed or not. You want amazon links? Don't feel bad we've all been there, my first fedora was a Dorfman too. It's perfectly good as a hat, but it's not Indy's hat.

I don't know what your hat looks like since you deleted it,

If you want to see it, he posted a different (better) picture over in his Home theater thread, and honestly if he'd posted that one over here first I probably wouldn't have said anything, he managed to find an angle where it looks halfway acceptable.

Not all my items are "accurate" or "expensive". I started this "hobby" as a decorative design for my home theater, originally not as a collector. My "Han Solo" blaster is 3D printed and painted, for example. A real collector would want a build of the actual gun parts. A real collector would want Indy's actual guns, even if they're $1000+. I wanted a nice display. I did get carried away with accuracy on some items, but some items (e.g. the Maltese Falcon Touch Tip lighter) are ONLY available as the real historical item so if you want one, it's $800 in mint condition. I didn't need mint, but it's what came up and I waited six months to find one. It was hard to pass up RM's Cross of Coranado seeing it was available. My grail isn't accurate. My gun isn't accurate. Until recently, my urn wasn't very accurate, but they looked good on display.

Why did it bother me? Imagine you bought a car you liked (say a Subaru WRX) and felt all happy about it and wanted to show it to your friends and the first comment you see is, "Gee, considering how nice a house you have, you should have at least gotten a Mercedes Benz now that they're offering them at 20% off." I was in a foul mood the rest of the evening. I've got a lot of physical pain problems right now and the last thing I needed to cheer me up was a "What a POS you bought" type message. Guess what? I don't come here to read negative posts about movie props. There's a lot of people with a lot of inaccurate props and they like them and/or can't afford a better version or can't justify spending the money on it. How long do you think they'll stick around if people insult what they bought or ignore them entirely? The answer is not very.

Thin skinned? In my humble opinion, I think it was just a flat out rude thing to say to someone (see above car example). I asked a half dozen people at work what they thought and if I overreacted and they all asked me why I'd even converse with someone like that. I wonder that myself.

The bottom line is even if you hate the car or the hat or the whatever, you can be polite about it. "That's not the hat I would have bought, but I hope you enjoy it." or "That's not bad for the price. Why didn't you get a truly accurate one?" I even said it wasn't accurate. It's not a show hat. It's to actually wear so I needed one that actually fit my head and spending $300+ on a hand-crafted otherwise accurate one seemed ridiculous when it still wouldn't be accurate and I don't have an eye for clothing (that hat he posted isn't accurate either). There's nowhere currently to display one in my home theater right now so why buy one for show that's not going to be on display? The hat in question he recommended isn't accurate either so it really comes down to how accurate do you want it and how much are you willing to pay to get it. If I wanted a truly accurate piece for a museum-like display, I would have ordered it from Penman Hats (i.e AdventureBilt) for $350+ and I would have ordered one that was the same size to fit Harrison Ford's head, not mine. I don't place the same value on clothing pieces as 'artifacts' especially when they made a couple dozen whips (some out of kip, most from kangaroo) and dozens of hats (at least three different versions not counting the grey dress hats).

How far off is this hat I have? It's larger to fit my head yet the specs aren't so far off as you might think.

Raiders Hat vs. Mine
Size: 7.25" (LG) - Mine 7.75" (XXL)
Crown: 2.5" - My Crown 2.5"
Brim: 2.75" front, 2.63 side - Mine 3" front, 2.8" side
Ribbon size: 1.5" - Mine 1.5"
Material: Sable - Mine Wool

Ribbon Color: "Dark Brown Galoot" - Mine: "Dark Chocolate"

The ribbon color is an item of high contention it seems. (see: The Raiders Fedora Ribbon Discussion Thread and Photo by neutronbomb_photos) as it apparently changes greatly in different lighting, but the "SJ" one looks hella similar to mine with the "purple sheen" shown in brighter lighting. I'd call it "chocolate" but I'm no color expert.

Hell look at the arguments about the ribbon color and quality (Defending AB & Penman Hats' Raiders Ribbon)

Most photos are taken from above or head-on. This is the closest view I could find from a movie (even though the temple of doom one is actually taller than the Raiders one. Maybe I have no eye for clothing (I'm NOT a snappy dresser and routinely wear black polo shirts), but the overall hat doesn't look "that" far off to my eyes and it actually fits my head quite well, perhaps even slightly too loose (unlike my Bogie/Toht) hat that's only XL and a bit too tight to want to stay on in high winds.

None of them are Indy's hat unless you have a used one from the movie and even then, which Indy's hat? The lore says it's the one given to him at the beginning of the Last Crusade, but we all know that's not true because they didn't use the same hat in any given movie from one to the next. Until that movie was made, for all we know he went through a dozen of them a year (and even that movie didn't imply that was the exact same hat, just that he got the idea for that hat from that hat. We know he buys other hats as there's the grey Fedora on the plane and at the end in D.C.). Almost all the props on here are relative levels of accuracy and how much one is willing to pay for a given item which is typically based on how important that item is to them. There's a reason I haven't bought a hat up until now. It's not the type of item that will likely display well in my home theater as there's no room and even if there was, it's a hat, not the Cross of Coranado.

If you want to see it, he posted a different (better) picture over in his Home theater thread, and honestly if he'd posted that one over here first I probably wouldn't have said anything, he managed to find an angle where it looks halfway acceptable.

I guess I'm blind as I just don't see these huge differences in hats. A slight pinch off here or a slightly longer brim or sable vs wool. If you saw my clothing budget, you'd know it's not where I put large sums of money. I wouldn't know one Bogey Fedora from another from a movie. I don't see 1/2" differences at a glance.

All I know is I would think twice before telling someone that "x" prop wasn't good enough. If that means I have thin skin, so be it. My momma told me if I had nothing nice to say, I should think twice before saying anything at all.

Yes, it's a cheap, but functional 8' $50 leather whip made in Georgia and probably a darker color than most/all the movie ones. I didn't feel like spending $400+ on a truly accurate one made from kangaroo. I thought I might find some corner of the home theater to put it in, but there aren't many places left. If nothing else, I was putting a cheap cosplay outfit together for under $200 (leather jacket still in the mail somewhere).

Raven bar candle holder update decide to remake it so hopefully it now looks more like a ram or sheep head, including have the horns in the right place so the headpiece hangs inbetween like Marion,s did, also added a battery operated flickering candle light for effect.

I love that lit candle effect there Petertiger. :D That also looks much closer to the movie prop now, IMO. Nice job.

I was looking at my bookshelf display in the dark and all seemed calm.

But when I turned the room lights on, I could swear that Idol looked right at me! CREEPY!

When I looked again, I think I just imagined it had eyes to begin with....

I can't recall if I ever posted this in here. I've added a few more pieces since this photo, so I need to take a new one. I made the outer stone frame from foam. Just a junk costume whip and satchel on display here since I use my good ones to costume in.
Bobby

Outstanding display! I love the stone frame.
