Yale and ERA Tardis Key Research (Info for the 1963-present keys)

Got my Euro Yales from the post today. Works for me for a 1st Doctor key as I doubt I'll find one based on the Evolution pic. Close enough for me and I actually like the look.

Well remember, the classic keys aren't gospel, they are just close representations. But I think what you found would make a great Davison key actually.

Nice. Do you think you'll be able to get more? I'd love to get one of those for my Davison key.

Exactly. It's hard enough matching some of the screen caps. We're basically shooting in the dark with many of the classic keys.

Are there markings for the other side? I wonder if we can source some blanks with that info.

Also I should add, with the exception of Colin Baker (and maybe Troughton) the rest/bumps are accurate in my evolution pic. Which is why I think the key you have would be a better Davison since it only has the one.

Here's the eBay link for them, do a best offer of $20 & they'll probably accept.

Thanks

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Yale must have some sort of reference number for the type of key this is. Granted as long as I have a lock to put it in I don't have a problem but I'd love to get some of these in blanks.

Nothing on the other side except a raised border around the edge of the key, they are not magnetic so I'm guessing they're brass underneath the plating.

More than likely.

Well I put in a Best Offer for $20. We'll see what we find. Timey, tell me, does this key type fit in a standard Yale Cylinder lock like they use on the Tardis Prop?

That I could not say. I'll probably never in my life have the fundage to own/build a TARDIS so my keys are mainly for static prop/look pretty/go with screwdrivers when I can afford those purposes. :p

Looking at the deadbolt that came with it I'd assume you could have a locksmith transplant the tumbler into something appropriate.

Lol, well neither can I but I still bought a brass ERA/Yale Cylinder lock. They aren't too expensive either. Like $20-ish on eBay. I had to have SOMETHING to cut my blanks to after all, lol

Can you take a picture of it next to you ERA key? Showing both sides. That would let us know what we need to know.

They look the same to me. Straker, if you have any lukc with blanks for these please let me know. Since I do have a TARDIS myself I'd rather have them cut to my box if I could. Nice find TimeyWhimey. Thanks for taking the pic.

No major revelations today, but I did get my Mooncrest 3rd today, it's bees knees! :p

Hopefully they'll have the 4th back in stock soon.

I'll be looking as soon as I get the keys in. Hopefully I can get blanks for them.

That's a nice cast too. My 4th Doctor's key I ordered a second of wasn't quite so nice the second time around but it makes a good pocket piece to keep on me. I use the more pristine one I have for display, lol.

OK, so I just got the lock in and we have a few leads:

Assa Abloy is marked as the maker or at least the package says "An Assa Abloy Group Brand" on it. On the back we get a "Yale.IT" web address, and lastly a "Wah Mei (Tooi Shan) Hardware LTD" name for where it was manufactured. I can also say that this IS compatible with a standard Yale key hole for the Rim Cylinder lock like on the Tardis and oddest of all, the keys were plated AFTER they were cut to the lock. I looked over the cross-section and indeed the cuts were made, then plated over, this is why the key looks like it's steel but the late marks are lighter than they should be for a fresh cut and the edges are not as sharp as they should be There isn't even any flashing left to the metal or even any shavings in general.

So, the hunt is on for blanks now.

Plating won't round the edges of the key, but to remove the flashing they run it through a machine, and that tends to blunt the edges a bit.

This is very interesting. Seems likely that if you do find blanks, we'd still have to get them plated after we cut the keys.
