WWE Wrestling Ring Model Scratch Build

Thought I'd share this build, if its in the wrong place feel free to move it along.

At the back end of summer my nephew said he wanted me to build him a model WWE wrestling ring for Christmas.

I explained he'd be just as well off getting the toy version, but he has them already and was adamant that he wanted a built one.

I gave it some thought and looked at what I had lying round and figured I'd give it a go.

Its roughly 1/18 scale. Researching it I found that a WWE ring is usually 18-20 feet square, this one measures in around 18".

I started with a 16"sq artists canvas and built a wooden frame to go around it. I secured the inside of the corners with plastic corner fixings, this gave me a ledge for the ring floor to sit on.

The underside of the canvas had a lip between the wood frame and the back of the material. This allowed me to wedge in some kids craft foam to give it a padded feel.

I managed to wedge some hardboard in behind that for extra support. And to make the whole thing solid I cut a square of mdf to the same size of the interior frame and fixed it in.

I lightly sanded off the exterior corners of the frame to give them a flat angled surface. Then cut some 28mm dowel to length and sanded a flat edge at the same height of the wood frame. Screwed the flat edge of dowell to the frame at every corner and secured further with 28mm pipe saddle clips. I had to build out the side of the frame with hardboard slightly for the clips to meet round the extra distance.

Filled in all the countersunk screw holes and edges of the built up area and other bits for neatness.

I drilled pilot holes into the cornerposts for hook and eye eyelets to be screwed in to hold the ropes.

Did a whole lot of sanding.

Cobbled together some steps out of mdf, cut the angle and drilled out space for the post and filled the front and edges.

Sanded some more.

Primed.

And painted.

Made skirts for the sides out of some black satin material and dark t-shirt transfer paper. The inkjet iron on stuff. Just used wonder web to iron in the hems (sewing is not a skill, I can do it, but it looks like crap).

Got some decorative sheet metal and cut out top plates for the steps, glued them on.

Stapled the skirts on from the inside.

Placed the ring floor into the centre and secured from underneath.

Screwed in the eyelets to the cornerposts.

I got some red bungee cord and tied it onto one eyelet, pulled it as tight as humanly possible and threaded through the others, pulling it tight and tieing it onto the last one. I secured the knots with a blob of superglue.

And voila!

Just got to fashion some pads for the interior corner posts on the rope fixings and I'm done.

Thanks for looking.

I was going to say it's time to break out the 80s wrestling figures to test it out but I think they'd be too small. It looks better than the toy ones they make, it looks real and not like plastic.

Let me start by saying that I'm not a WWE fan. Not even one little bit.

Having said that, hell of a job you did there. That's a fine scale replica by any measure. Excellent job!

Thanks. It feels quite real with the padded floor the foam pushes the canvass up quite nicely. And its solid and heavy, probably way too heavy, I hadn't considered weight at all in the planning.
It is a bit big for the old action figures, when he was first asking me about it he was wanting it to be about 2.5-3 foot square! I talked him down from that.

Thank you.

This is awesome! I like the use of the older WWE logo (better than their current). What are you thinking of using for corner pads?

Thanks guys.
sean3z, the corner pads have been my biggest problem on this. Probably not helped by only having thin eyelet screw shafts to fix anything to.

I had some faux leather stripped off some old document holders i was gonna try an use but it is just to thick. I cant fold it neatly at all.

My current thought is using some foam and sponge wrapped in some of the left over satin. Overhang of the satin then wrapped around the eyelet shaft and secured with black electrical tape, then a small length of black cable sheath over that. The satin being pulled back bends the padding quite neatly round the eyelet and doesnt interfere with the ropes at all.

Ive had a couple of test plays with it an looks and feels quite good. I have the logo from the centre ring printed out quite small on the transfer paper so each pad will be also have the logo. I am hoping to have a bit more play with that tomorrow and will put pics up.

Lol. Yeah that would've been quite a project. It looks great though, really nice job. WAY better than a plastic toy version would be.

The plan outlined above for the corner pads didn't work out. I couldn't get it neat and it got messier the more I played with it. I was in B&Q stocking up on some glue when I got an idea.

Pipe insulation foam

I sliced off a pile of discs.

and squared off a top and bottom

Covered the lot with a good few layers of plastidip i had in the shed. Glued the logos on the front of them stuck them over the rope and eyelets. I used a loctite doble sided tape with a bit of glue for added security and its solid.

It worked quite well, it looks a bit rough on the photo's but you don't tend to see it so much under regular lighting. But its done now and ready to be handed over on Christmas morning. I'll be a little bit sad to see it go.

I'll let you know if he likes it.

He likes it.

It went down very well, he says its for displaying not playing. I may have found a young apprentice.
