Wookiee build in Georgia

Hello everyone!

In late October, I started the long process of working on a Chewbacca costume. So far, the shirt and pants are almost finished, the bandolier and pouch have arrived and the feet are nearly complete. I've started work on the head and will soon post pictures once it is done, too.

The mask has been the most difficult part. Either I add too much hair (hand punching it into the silicon face) or there isn't enough. So, I've been grooming and attempting to style him a bit as I move from area to area. I have lots of bobby pins in place to give it an over-all look, though I'm always open to ideas.

Feel free to leave comments, opinions, and suggestions.

Thanks :)

Jason

What type of hair are you using? It looks the closest to the real suit that I've seen! Great work.

That color and hair texture looks terrificly accurate! Great looking Chewie, so far!

Just for grins, I know of another Chewie costume where the owner wove in some of Peter Mayhew's own hair, which I thought was a pretty cool idea.

I don't know the first thing about punching hair. but if I had to guess, I would say that different parts of the face had the hair punched at different angles. Kinda like how a kid with alfalfa hair can't get some parts to lay certain ways cause of the way his hair grows in naturally... meaning areas like from the nose back I think they punched the hair at very sharp angles so it would slope back and lay down as opposed to being poofy and making the face appear bulkier.

Again, I don't know the first thing about it and its just a guess! The suit looks DEAD ON! The hair looks perfect! I just saw that you said you were having trouble with the face hair co-operating with you and that is my un-educated guess! :lol

Interested to hear what the experts say! There are deffinately alot of them here!

Wow!! Looks awesome so far! Great news is when you are done with the costume you can put in a freezer and sell it as a bigfoot! :):lol:love

Yes, are you planning to use lifts on your suit? I'm always curious about the internal workings of the wookie :)

Thanks for the kind comments, folks. I'll answer the questions, but I'm too lazy to 'quote' all of them, heh.

I've been using synthetic hair; strawberry blond, gray, black and some white. The trick is to blend the black and the gray, then integrate it into the blond. I'm happy with the suit so far. I'll be wearing it for the first time next weekend, so we'll see how it holds up :)

The face is one of Duck's kits (he listed them last year). The face is made of dragonskin, which is a type of silicon. The hair has been hand-punched into the silicon at angles that will direct the hair flow. It isn't complicated, but very tedious.

And yes, bigfoot! Hah. I'm worried about walking the neighborhood here in Georgia, in fear of someone mistaking me for Bigfoot and shooting me. ;)

I've had some luck with the face, though keeping it in this style is a bit difficult. Thank the maker for bobby pins :)

As for the height issue, I've made platform feet/lifts. I decided against the drywall stilt method because it makes the person too tall; their arms look a bit too short and stubby. Once I get the toes and hair attached, I'll post additional pictures.

Jason: Like I told you on Facebook, I think your Chewie is awesome! Keep up the great work. We need you to get that approved ASAP for the Shuttle event down here at my base ;)

I'll be finishing him up this weekend, your worshipfulness :lol

What kind of base did you use for the body suit ? I would love to create this for just a fun piece for display. Seems like you are moving well thought it. Are you having to die the hair any ?

Of course Chewie is smiling; he's a happy wookiee :)

Base for the suit? I used a mesh material for the shirt and pants, then hook-latched the hair onto it. I have it on a display mannequin.
