Wolverine all day baby! Jackets, belts, claws, oh my.

Hey guys - I've been mostly lurking ever since the hacking thing, but wanted to pop my head into this thread and see if anyone knows if Heron's started up custom production again? I know it'll be too warm here by the time it arrives but I'd like to order that X2 still...

Just got done with some light distressing on the buckle... Here it is so far...

I've used P2000 paper, and then followed it up with P600 to get the nose and eyebrow lines a little better... I think it works!

I may want to darken the white feather area soon, since I rather liked the Origins "yellowing"... But for now I think I'm ok!

The belt is X-0 of course, so either/or works.. But I think it looks decent as is.... I'll see what I feel when wearing it!

Regards!

Looking good! I drybrushed mine with some black to make the vanes of the feathers pop a little and i think it looks pretty good...

Yeah...I was wondering about that... But I've pulled the vanes out in a similar way by sanding the paint down to the metal on the raised sections, so although they aren't black they stand out and hit the light well... It's added a fair bit of detail that was slightly covered by the paint...

How did you "Yellow" the white up? I've used an "off white" base, with "white" paint over it near the head section to fade the two colours and make it seem older and worn in... And the sandpapering has made it stand out better, but I was wondering what options I could think of for yellowing it up some, other than just repainting the white areas?

Thanks Travis!:thumbsup

Here's my personal X-O buckle:

There is a lot of detail you can't see in most photos and there's more aging on the feather than just the extra "yellowing" from the X-1 verison. This one took me a lot longer than I care to admit, but I wanted to get all the detail just right.

The yellow was pre-mixed to the shade I wanted and then I did various black washes (black acrylic with water) to get the different shading effects I wanted. All the silver was brought back using a small screwdriver to carefully scrape the paint off exactly where I wanted. Then the entire piece was coated in a polyacrylic spray to prevent further scratching.

Kind regards,
Magnoli

Yeah....That really IS a masterpiece....I'd been using your images from the website as a rough guide actually, since they're the best straight-on images I could find, and they showed the areas I should focus on...(Thanks for that too!), but this? This is just beautiful....

I love the colour too..The yellow there looks perfect...And although I haven't decided what to do in regards to that, having this as a guide is the best thing I could have asked for...The black washes as well would work I suspect..But I'm loathe to try something for the first time on this as I'm not entirely confident in that just yet, and mine looks decent enough for me now...

But...Having said that, I get the feeling that this will be a "work in progress" for many more years...As all hobbies should be...

Thanks for the "standard setter" Indy...Wonderful work! :thumbsup

I just gave mine a wash in a color called antique. Lemme get up a pic. The face needs to be touched up some more due to the fact that i pretty much wear it all the time.

For my buckle I wanted a good mash up of X1 and X0. X1 is just too white for my taste and X0 is too yellow. To me, this one is just right...

Travis....

Bloody wonderful work Sir!!

I like that....Antique eh? Just an acrylic paint with water? I'll pop back to the paint dudes here and ask them what they can suggest to work with metal best to get that effect...I agree entirely, X-1 is a touch too white, and X-0 looked more natural, so something between those would be good I think...

Thanks mate!

Yup. Mixed it pretty thin. But I'm telling ya, that black dry brush ever so slightly applied gave it most of the character. That and wearing the everloving snot out of it ...

What kind of paints did you use for the dry brush?

I'm slowly being pulled into thinking you and Indy know a lot more than you should about this, and I'd like to take advantage of it!

Yellow wash first, let that set, then the dry brush over the highlights to bring them out?

Yeah, but its not yellow it was called antique and the best I could approximate it too is REALLY old lace doilies...lol

It had hints of yellow, but it just looked like "old" white. The drybrushing I did with just plain ol' black. I would load up a small brush with some acrylic thinned with just a touch of water and then take a paper towel and do my best to wipe all the paint off the brush. Then I would hold the brush at an angle and just let the high spots pick up what miniscule amount of paint was left on the brush. I worked slow and kept building until I got what I was after. Then I sealed it with an acrylic spray matte sealer...

Thanks Travis....

I'll get myself a decent sized brush (all I have are smaller detail model brushes right now, perhaps I could get a make up brush to work?), and give the drybrush a go with the paints I have here... I think I have an Acrylic black still..... And yeah, I'll have another look at the paint selection in Tachikawa to see if they have something a little more "off white" than I have right now..

Thanks a lot for the help Sir!

Thanks for the update, MJF! Cannot wait to get mine :)

And love the belt buckles, gents. I need to pick one up for myself...along with a belt!

Totally psyched about getting these MJF....Thanks for the work on these!

And thanks for the buckle photo! How did you get the aged effect? I've dry brushed mine a touch, and that added a fair bit to the "beat in" look of it... It also took the "shine" off the white paint, so it looks a little more "used and broken" now.. Although I'm still debating the yellower colour or staying with the white!

Anymore information is a plus!!

Regards, and thanks again!

For the main feathers, I dry brushes thin partial layers of white, yellow, and gray with black and gray for the tips, little by little over and over. Dry brush little dab so that other colors show from underneath and the edges of different colors start to blend. It is more of trial and error. Don't focus on the full area, just small bits a feather at a time. This way it helps make each feather look separate and distinct, not a blob of continuing color all over. When I was done, I did a wash of yellow a wash of brown and a wash of black all over in separate applications letting each one dry. The wash is suppose to represent age and weathering and age and weathering is not monotone so do not be afraid to use multi colors. After I steel wooled it, I did a clear coat to preserve it. After it dried, I then rubbed a dry cloth to dull down the clear coat shine.

I am as excited for you guys to get your tags as you are to receive them.

Great stuff!

Thank you Sir!

I agree, the idea about brushing each feather separately is a good one indeed! I might give that a try if I get unhappy with this one once it's worn in a touch...

Thanks for the ideas (to all!) :)

Still needs a lot of work as I haven't had much time over the last few days. But I finally have the sleeves maintaining some creasing to allow the length to be just about right I think. It's still a little wet in this pic. Sorry for taking it in the bathroom mirror

And yes, I know, I know...it's too clean!! :lol I'm getting there. But had to share for now!
