The old Alpha plaster sucks donkey's mate far too soft. the modell plast is crystacast it's very hard and will hold up to a good number of pulls but you may have to keep an eye on the ratio of expansion you get when it cures...Whcih is one reason why I switched from clay dividing wallls to brass shims...I also sculpt a flashing channel around the thie piece to cut down on any excess bleeding you get from the mold halves not sitting as flush as they should with the expansion of the plaster...Learnt that trick when doing prosthetics to keep blending edges as thin as thin but it works a treat with my molds for the odd latex thing I do now.
Used Alpha plaster for my open and closed P1 sculpts.
my open has had over 25 pulls now and is only just starting to need repairing. its hard measurement is higher than the Ultracal and Hydracal the guys in the USA use. 7024psi
however the Modell is over 9000 so its cool
right im gonna go try mold the neckring, then work.
Well the neckring mold went real good, ( i was concerned as i had to turn it as the plaster was drying to get to the underside. )
only one tiny little bubble which ive filled.
heres a quick pic if anyone interested.
Oh and i got home from work to find a msg on answering machine that the plaster has come in and they will ship it 1st thing tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed itll arrive friday.
looks good mate, though I'm not sure why you've made the mold open at both ends as it'll make slush casting a pain in the bum. Still looks a corker...I still panic why I cast in stone as you never know what air pockets you'll find...I tend to press all over the inside to see if there are any errant pockets under the initial beauty coat. Learnt that the hard way with the old bat cowls I made as the mold initially looked cracking until I sanded the interior to remove any uneveness on the surface and put my thumb through a BIG pocket...Still looks good.
Well it's probably just me being bone idle as when I used to do a lot of latex stuff, I used to dwell the molds rather than slush as I usually had 4 or fuve of the same mold on the go, just poured the latex in each and left and then poured out and then poured again to build the thickness desired...You do tend to get increased shrinkage that way but for fast production stuff it's a real time saver especially if you put the molds in a box containing rock salt, as this draws the moisture even quicker but does mean the stone can break down quicker than normal. I also soak the molds prior to pouring too as this seems to prevent a lot of air bubble forming too.
Wow that looks fabulaous!!! just in case there are an miscasts (god willing there won't be any) let me know I would be interested in using them to do pint tests on
1st ring came out of the mold this morning ( i took it out too early and ripped it in a few places ggrr, teach me to be patient )
Ive repaired it and then painted, heres 2 pics ( excuse top pic, i took the photo as the permawet was still drying ), the 2nd one showing how it sits on the upper body, it fits great apart from around the P1 neck which is smaller than my wolf anyway,
it also fits me great and im 6ft2 with a 44 inch chest.
Still undecided if i should sand the flat bits or leave them alittle uneven, uneven may make it look more eerrr natural ?
Oh yeah , the plaster arrived today for mr wolfs molding. guess thats tomorrow planned out.
