Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Well, I've nearly got my paint figured out, but something is bothering me.

As I work on this first junk pull, painting it and all, I've got the nice foam rubber pull that I can throw around, and it has no weight to it. It's almost pillow like.

Detail is solid, shape, look and everything else checks out and represents the sculpt/product as it should.

So hears my question(s).
While the fact that I'm making it out of foam rubber is no surprise or secret, I am slightly bugged by the lack of WIEGHT. It's nots even a pound.

Should I add weight?

Should I add a rigid foam interior so its not so soft?

Or are we okay that our shelf sitting gigantic book is not going to hurt anyone or anything if it falls off the shelf.

From where I sit now, the best reason I can think of that this works great is if a kid (or a non propping buddy) handles it. They would have to try many different things to try to destroy this prop.
That can come in reallllll handy.

I would value your opinions very, very much!!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Personally, I don't mind it being light as long as all the deals are there and it's structurally sound, and I'm curious about the softness of it. I kind of like the idea that it's so light and soft haha. But I can see why someone might want some weight so it feels like a big book...

Is there a way to add some weight while maintaining some of that softness?

I would be fine with the light weight. But either way, as long as the details are there I'm fine with it.

don't remember who sent these to me...

These are mine. PM me hotshot if you need more details. If I remember right these prints also had Pantone color numbers that were used by the studio.

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Ideally it would be nice to have more weight to it, in my opinion. But really, like ghargiss and ecl said, if it looks good in the details, I wouldn't mind too much if it was lightweight.

In what way would you add weight? If you were thinking of going that route.

How much would a rigid foam interior take away from the softness? I don't know too much about the process, but in the end it is a "book" and books have a certain rigidity to them, even if it is part beast. Adding something like that probably would work, especially if it was an interior/structural type of adjustment.

I'm sure I'll like the end result no matter what path you decide on, it looks like you put out incredible work.

The test paint pics are looking great. I'm getting even more excited for this piece!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

The general opinion I'm getting, both here and in emails I sent out to each buyer due for shipping, is that the lightness is okay. A few have requested some heft to their books, so I may have to keep track of who wants what. I'm still waiting to hear from about half of you in the FS thread, so be sure to pipe up. Thanks!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I personally would like a little weight on mine. The details look awesome, and that's the first and foremost importance, though. How would you implement weight to it?

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Yeah I wouldn't mind some weight to it, but have no clue what you'd do..

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

After giving it some more thought and reading the others' responses I think I might prefer some weight to mine. As Polexia said, it is a book and book do have some firmness to them. I don't have any suggestions on adding weight though. Even though it is an animal, animals do have internal bones for structure and rigidity.

I'm very impressed so far. Great work!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I'm not on the list, but couldn't you cast it lightweight and then the buyers could open it up to add weight inside?

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I'm going to do a full test pull tomorrow, with an outer layer of the detail rubber, a second layer of nerf, then a wall of resin about 2/3 of an inch thick. If I'm doing my math right, it should kick it to just under two pounds. If I can manage that, I think it will be a happy medium all around. Fortunately,I have enough folks that want light and squishy to not put me too far behind!!

i'd like to see how the heavier version comes out before I decide about ours..

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

IMHO, I don't think is should be rock hard, but considerably firm. Also, I know how much satisfaction I would get out of just holding it if it had some nice weight to it. Not necessarily heavy, but heavy enough that when you pick in up you shouldn't be surprised by the weight. And I'm trying desperately to get on the buyer's list before it sells out!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Okay, all problems solved, casting has resumed.

Weight is just over 2.5 pounds. Makes a nice thunk when it hits the floor, but it's not heavier than a half gallon of milk, so it can be cosplayed with easily.

Here's how it's gonna go:

Detail coating of semi-rigid resin
Undercoat of semi-rigid foam rubber
Backing coat of soft foam rubber
Inner support frame of styrofoam
Front teeth and tongue in semi rigid resin
Front tentacles in detail coating of semi rigid resin and foam

Paint colors are all figured out too, and I'll be getting pics up later today. THe eyes are very, very scary.

More to come soon!

THANK YOU for all the feedback and opinions!!

Well, as promised after much trouble shooting to get the tanish/brownish colors right, here's a few teaser shots of the paint master. Enjoy!!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Painted pics up!!

Very nice! I like the way the colors turned out; The eyes are very neat! Also really love the way the gold colored font turned out too. Great job! Really looking forward to seeing this in person...this is really fantastic

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Painted pics up!!

That's actually the SECOND attempt at that font. Once I got the whole 'head' done, it just didn't look right, and I pealed the whole layer off and redid it. It was a pretty good idea!
