WIP: HPotter:POA Monster Book of Monsters!! FINISHED!

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

You'd have to pay about 450.00 actually. I know its odd, but I've got the price point all figured out, from clay to shipping, and you'll like my price much better. **cough onetwentyfive cough**

While I feel like I'm laboring the point. . . I'll take you along my decision making . . .

Take a look:

The hero (Harry's book) has such short hair and such tight lines along the text that I'd not only have to do crazy things like hand glue, or god forbid hand punch fur in. Even worse, it seems so short on the ends(tentacles) that its almost velvet like?!!? And don't get me started on the mange going on all over the book.

What's even worse, is even if we found a thin enough fur to lay down, scrape, and trim, I'd have to build a die to cut the letters out! Ever make a die?! They are expensive and hard to make! Ack! :eek

Now, here's one of the stunts:

8240-stuntbook.jpg

We could do this, but I don't think it looks very good . . .

I could go over all the obvious points on this, but bottom line is it doesn't look alive enough, and the fur is just messy. I also think its a bit of a cop out to trim huge holes around the letters, and also there's zero mange, no lifelike direction to the fur, and the eyes look dead.

Another option I'm leaving out, is the belt **ducks**

Sorry, but I'm not covering that lettering up. Plus, I want this thing to look like it's going to leap off the shelf.

So, as I move along with the sculpt, I am taking a stunt standpoint, and heroing it up a bit. While the fur it sculpted, it will be a semirigid resin with a soft foam backing, so it will feel soft. I'll also be setting in cat eyes so the eyes will look very alive. I'm also researching lizard eyes, but haven't found any affordable options yet.

So, sculpted fur is the way to go. *shrug*

I'm working on the mouth today, and the tounge. Pics later this weekend.

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

I found a replica of the Monster Book of Monsters a long time ago, it doesn't seem perfectly screen-accurate but if it can help you, here is the link: Jase's Books - Monster Book

It's looking real good, can't wait to see the finish product.....

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

Thanks! Did some touchups today, like correcting the lettering, and added some fur here and there based on the outstanding references provided. I'm taking the day off today to get some much needed down time (Skele-Gros and other projects are keeping me just as busy), but I expect to have this sculpt done by next Monday!!. Be sure to keep the feedback and critiques coming, as I'll be popping this guy into silicone pretty quick . . .

oh, and the interest thread is up with all the details.

This is simply superb! really, really well done. I worked on these for the movie (I painted some of the ones the kids used) and so I've seen the real versions up close many times in the past and your replica looks very accurate to me.

You can see what one of the 'rougher' back ground versions looked like over here..

By the way what is it sculpted in? Oil based clay?

Wow, thanks man!! That made my day!!!

I'm sculpting it in a cheap clay/wax WED type clay of my own making. It's on the softer side, maybe a medium. Then I give it a coat of etching primer so I can be a bit rougher with it. Also, I'd mixed in sulfur based clay in there on accident so I need the primer just in case.

So, :confused any chance you could tell us how to solve the fur problem? What'd you guys use? :)

(PS Buckbeak is pretty much one of my all time favorite animatronics, totally bought it)

Re: WIP: HPotter:pOA Monster Book of Monsters!! Grrr!

On the 'hero' books the fur was crated by flocking them with a mixture of coloured flock of medium length. The flock was then smoothed down before the glue dried to give it a more natural look and to create the kind of realistic rhythm that hair growth has.

There's a real art to that I assure you.

All the hero books were cast in foam latex of course. The background ones were latex and two part foam If I remember correctly. Many of which were given away as gifts to certain executives.

Out of curiosity is soft foam different from what's inside the skelegro bottles?

What will the tentacles be made of? Will it be safe to add our own hair? Will the resin be a bit thicker on this one? I'm wanting to attempt to put hair on it myself but I wouldnt want to if any pressure would crack the skin.
