Winter Soldier (Female) WIP

Oooookay, so I told myself that once I finished my Winter Soldier jacket, I'd do up a post on here and try to shake off my case of newbie nerves. I'm gonna make an attempt to get through this without goofing things up. DEEP BREATH, SELF.

Hi. I'm currently working on a Winter Soldier comic/movie fusion costume to replace the comic version I made as my very first cosplay. I guess you could call this current build a fem version, too? I mean, I'm a lady, so. It's inherently ladyish. I'm aiming to have this done for NYCC 2014, and have been considering making a prop Cap shield to go with it if I end up having enough time to spare before October. I have more of breakdown on how I'm making things over on my cosplay tumblr -- but, if you're like me, you're probably going OKAY ALREADY WHERE'RE THE PICTURES? Say no more. Ba-boom:

Hey! Very cool! Keep up the awesome work! There are a couple of threads up on here that are working on the movie version as well. How are you planning on doing the arm? I have thought of different materials. Foam, material, latex, though not 100% sure on it yet.

The jacket looks really good.
Thanks for pointing out your little winter soldier :lol.

There are lots of options for a shield. The saucer sled, airsoft, or the full up spun aluminum.
Plus, I am sure that Hasbro will release a TWS version of the shield if you don't have the time to do one of the others.

Thank you! :D Haha, yeah, and trust me that I've been lurking on those threads.

As for the arm? Someone with an awesome Winter Soldier cosplay on tumblr was kind enough to break down how she made hers when I asked about it. I'll probably be trying that method out since it doesn't involve extensive casting and, y'know, things that are a little beyond my ability to make happen right now.

I have to say that is a great looking jacket. Keep up the good work.

Looks great. Can't wait to see it develop.
There are a number of us working on the MCU Winter Soldier. There's a good amount of research done and still more to do. :)

Thanks! LOL, his body was in the shot, so I left it.

I'm eyeing the saucer sled approach for the shield, yep. It seems pretty straight-forward, and I'm digging what I've seen people do with that one.

You're not kidding. I can't even tell you how long I've sat at my laptop, just squinting at pictures of MCU's costume to try and figure out how I can evoke the right level of Buckyness, even if I know I can't faithfully replicate something THAT detailed. o_o

Did you sew the vest, or modify something?

Or it it just off-the-shelf?

Modified something! It started its life as this:

I hacked the snot out of it, made new pieces for it, swore at it lots, then put it all back together again.

Wow, the person did a really good job on that arm. Didn't think of doing it that way. I would say maybe try some automotive paint on the arm? DupliColor is a good one that is used on a lot of other jobs I have seen here, and it looks amazing. What are your thoughts on the straps? I have been playing with what to use for a while. Some pictures look black, some an olive, really hard to nail it. I as thinking a cotton black webbing.

Right? Gotta love the innovation of cosplayers on a budget. I'm planning on tackling the arm after I do the mask, but I'll keep DupliColor in mind.

I'd say cotton black webbing for the straps, yeah. If anything, it looks like weathering is lightening it up in places.

Looking great so far! It's also great to see another fellow female cosplaying WS (though I'm going to be crossplaying, rather than doing a femme version). Btw I'm pretty certain Bucky's harness is black, based on all the ref pics I'm scrounged up. He actually doesn't look too weathered, so it may be the light? idk...I'm sure either way you go will still look great. You have probably come across it already but there is a really in-depth thread covering all his various pieces with some really good ref pics.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing how this comes together!

Holy cow,,,, that's a nice alteration job on the jacket! There are a bunch of options for the shield, modding the airsoft shield is probably the cheapest and least time consuming. Also the sturdiest. Doing a steel or aluminum shield is a bit more time consuming, but if you need any help, you have myself or the many other folks on here that can help. Good luck!

Thanks! :)

Much appreciated! I wouldn't call this an outright femme version since I'm not actively patterning things to look female, if you know what I mean? It's just me underneath the costume, LOL. So it's inherently a female Winter Soldier. And, yeah, the harness is black, but there's weathering on most of his costume if you get the hi-res pictures and really take a close look. There're browns and greys -- which is where I think the olive came into it. It's not pure black after wear and tear, so that makes sense! Steamshovel provided this close-up, and it's a pretty good example of what I mean:

Lots of textures going on in that costume! I'd imagine they had to do that since black on black with black and more black wouldn't pop on the screen unless they went full-tilt bananas on the costume design itself.

Oh, and I should probably mention that I'm not going comic or movie anymore -- it was the original plan to fuse both, but this has turned to me putting more of my own spin on things as I keep working. I actually doubled back and started doing a little more detailing on the jacket, which is why my lame butt hasn't given another update since the first post. I'll try to get some more pictures in the near future. :)

Thank you, thank you! :) I'm still altering since I can't leave anything alone, so I made myself a bit of a liar there.

The more I read around the forums, the more I feel like I'd love an aluminum shield, now that you mention it. Cost isn't totally limiting for me, so I might have to pick your brain about what you'd recommend (if you're okay with that)!
