whoa! Weta "legs"

It sucks that she moved all the way to NZ only to have the job evaporate a few months later. I hope she is still working with Weta on other projects like [Insert Directors Name]'s Hobbit movies.

I also live in Seattle and I would have loved to have checked these out in person. I'm pondering how I can build my own just for fun. I'm wondering if it can be done with strong plastics/PVC because I don't have a clue how to work with metal.

Yeah, they brought her on to work on other stuff. When they saw the legs they said, 'Hey cool, you want to sell them through Weta?'

She said she can't tell me what she's working on but due to her history of sculpting large scale dragons I've been hoping she's working on Smog. *fingers crossed*

I know she was using ABS for parts of her design but I don't know if those changed once they started to produce them.

I tried them out once right before she moved to NZ. They were pretty cool but I felt really vulnerable. I didn't spend enough time getting used to them.

She has a very 'Pay it Forward' philosophy. Email her on her site about the metals and plastics. It may take awhile for her to get back to you. It's usually been a week or two when I hear from her after sending an email.

But I'm betting if you want to go with a design similar to hers, you're going to have to go with metal for at least some parts due to the stress put on the extensions.

Yeah, the Weta Legs thing was all kinda weird. I'd love to hear the real story.

It looked like they did a decent job of marketing them, I guess they just didn't have the numbers needed to continue on.

I had thought about ordering a pair, they sure looked cool. I know a few weeks ago they offered a sale, like 25% off or something, I almost jumped on them then.

Personally, I didn't have a big problem with the price. It sure seems like guys spend a lot more than that on things around here. I guess it's all just personal opinion, but I didn't think they were way over priced.

I wonder how many sets of legs they actually produced?

According to the creator:

Weta has for the time being canceled the production of the legs. My other co-inventors in the states are looking into producing their own version but theirs will not be ready for a few months. If you would like more information, please contact them at reverselegs@gmail.com

I wonder if those will be the same as the originals, with running/stair climbing ability and great strength, low profile... Man, do I ever want a set. Add that to the list of expensive things I absolutely "need". I'm definitely starting to save up my cash in case they come back!

I just saw this post, As a longtime stilt walker and extreme costume maker, I can honsetly say , if you can make them go for it..But since they have invested so much time and energy in making it right it might be worth it to just buy them. too bad they are off the market so soon. I have used power risers, and sheet rock stilts nether can do what the video showed while maintain that look. never mind for hours. I hope they get back on the market!

The Weta legs would also make for a good dinosaur costume, you could make a wicked raptor or small tyranosaur using those legs. No more needing to wear the dino legs on the side of your legs, now you could just have your legs hidden completely inside the costume. Now how freaky/creepy that would be to have something like these walking around but without the operator's legs sticking out it?

is this how they do that "Walking With Dino's" show???

For the smaller animals yes, this is almost exactly (if not exactly) how they do the smaller animals...

Check it out - starting around 1:40:
YouTube - Awesome Robot dinosaur

Think my favorite part though, is when they show how the walk cycle works... ;)

Yeah, I think that's from the WALKING WITH DINOSAURS touring show. I remember seeing it a couple years ago on a YouTube clip and being blown away. Last year it came to the Chicago United Center and we took the kids, it was really cool.

Those are so awesome! I want some! Haha! Definitely wont be able to buy those for a while!

I would love to build a Deathclaw from Fallout 3 using the Weta legs.

Oh well, I'll have to look to other alternatives.

There are DIY plans for making legs like this online. Probably not as sturdy but alot more affordable.

ugh..one day im going to have to build something like this, because ive always wanted to build a werewolf costume from "the Howling" those scared the bejeezus outta me when i was a kid, and i still think they are some of the best looking werewolves ive ever seen!

My son tried building Minotaur legs...they broke due to some welding issues as well as structural issues. They worked, but did not handle the stress of walking on them for long.
However, he doesn't have a huge budget, so we are stuck with some homemade contrations.
however, if we ever win the lottery-that will be one of our purchases!!

nicely done sir ive just checked your link out i was wondering is that £599 for each stilt as in £1200 for the pair of is it £599 for a pair ?

I am 99.9% sure it's 599 for a set... Just buying one would be pretty worthless.
