Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

Got my kit and it looks great! Sid has also been great to deal with which I appreciate... :) :thumbsup

I was wondering though:
My grips have a rather large gap at the top, and despite a few reassemblies, I don't see any way of closing the gap aside from adding material to the grips (which I really don't want to do). Is this present on all the kits? Or is mine defective? Sid mentioned that the grips need minimum work/tweaking, so maybe I'm just not seeing an easy solution...

Defianntly NOT right...

Yeah, mine fit fine out of the box...and those don't even look quite right. From all I've heard, though, I'm sure Sidiero would send you replacements with no problem.

I don't think it's the grips, I think it's the way the frame is attached to the 2 side plates. Pull out the 2 back counter sunk screws and the 2 middle Allen screws and see if you can slide the frame to close the gap.

If you can I think Sid will have to send you a whole replacement frame that you will have to drill and tap.

If you can't drill and tap the frame he might have to replace the whole kit.

If you can drill and tap the frame you could fill the original holes in the frame with solder and re-drill it correctly

You know, I'm pretty sure you're right. The plates that the safety goes through are extending beyond the frame.

Alright, i got a little update from my plater...

unfortunantly you cannot chemically oxidize brass PLATING, it will basically eat it away....... so what im going to do is have it plated and polished and just let it age naturally.
I have had several lightsabers made with polished brass and it darkens up pretty quickly where i live... i guess its alot of humidity...... ill just handle it alot and let it darken by itself

Hm. I wonder if that includes the old fashioned ammonia vapor way. You know, were you hang the item in a tank (aquarium, etc.) and put a little thing of ammonia in the tank, and let the vapors age the metal. I've got great results with that technique, maybe it would work, if you cant use purma blue, or aluma black, or plum brown.

Anyway's, I have a new question. I plan on using alumna black, or puma blue, then using "treasure gold" (it's a rub, and buff, wax basted, application.) for the brass high lights. So, will oil keep brass from tarnishing, or can I clear coat Perma blue? Because, I know from experience, that "treasure gold" will tarnish, bad, over time, and I don't want that.

To what countries does the QMx contract extend to? because (and I know for some this would be blasphemy) the only real difference between the firefly, and serenity versions of this gun (other then the finish) is the clip. So, especially those that are doing this one way too brassy anyway's, all you would need to switch back, and forth, would be a "serenity clip". I wonder if we could get a run of just the clips done, here, or out side of the US.

Magazines would be the correct term. ;)

Also, there was another difference, the right side of the Serenity gun has additional cosmetic detail.

Send Siderio an email and ask him if you can make one. He gave the go-ahead for Wakals wooden grips, don't see any harm in asking.

Ah heck, Nathan also says "I dropped my cartridge" in the bloopers when he plugs the Alliance guy on Haven.

I don't reckon none of 'em are all that hung up on proper lingo for their iron. :p

(though technically, "magazine" would be correct, yes.)

how about detachable ammunition feeding device...... lol

the term "clip" is more accurate describing the clips used on M1 rifles... i think Mausers had clips

Just out of curiosity; has anyone else in Australia ordered Sid's Mal pistol kit yet? I'm just wondering how long my kit will take to get here. :)

Isn't it extremely unlikely to get a metal replica like this through Australian Customs?

I fear you will have it stopped at customs unless you can get permission.

I have given up shipping any models to Australia myself.

I don't think even a well know Classic Star Trek Phaser can get in.

Hmmm i wonder if someone else could make a Serenity style magazine for this sidkit, if Sid isnt willing to.......
someone like .... say..... Rich?!!?!?!?

I've found out how extremely easy it is to get it through.

All I need is this specific form (a "B709"), where I filled it out, faxed it off to the police (someone signs it there), and they sent a copy back to me. Once customs receives the kit, they'll hold it and give me a call and say something like "Show us the right documentation in 30 days or it will be destroyed," I then simply go down to customs, show them the form and they release it.

By the way, I didn't make this up; I got customs on the phone myself, and that's what they told me. I was actually pretty surprised it could go so smoothly.
