When hollywood made good films.

Anyone else here finding themselves watching TCM and buying classic movies more and more than the newer stuff they're putting out? I'm being kind as calling some of it "stuff" lol. Just seems that HOllywood has lost something even since the 90s. I know there are alot of young people taking an interest in older movies so apparently I'm not the only one looking for more substance.

There are a few great movies nowadays, some good and a heck of a lot of crap!, heck most films lately are remakes!!..

I love the older hollywood movies.
To name but a few.
Singing in the rain.
White Christmas.
Wizard of OZ.

original clash of the titans.

I agree with you, TCM is my fav channel at the moment.

I agree with you EXCEPT about AMC. There is still some hope for them. They are going to get the Walking Dead series...which looks very promising at this point, other than that...yeah, right on!

TNT was really good for old movies too and i loved monstervision (the pre-Joebob briggs).

You're forgetting 'bout Mad Men.

Rubicon is pretty good too. The Red Letter Media guy who just re-reviewed the Star Trek reboot mentioned this problem with sequels.

I didn't know they made any good movies in the 90's. If you don't count Star Wars and Star Trek, the last good movies that Hollywood made were back in the 60's.

I always found that Hollywood has had it's share of good and bad movies. The really bad ones just don't get shown later because they are terrible. So when you wind up looking at older shows, you're looking at the cream vs. the whole milk you see every year as it's coming out. However I think the thing that really gets on people's nerves is the new marketing decision by parts of Hollywood that sheeple will go to films just for special effects and 'splosions so why even try to have a good script or good acting. There's always been movies like that but I don't think they were pushed as strongly with massive budgets like the last few years or so.

That being said I think it was a crime for me to have to visit 6 video stores in 2 100k pop. cities to find 1 copy of Zulu.:angry

Really?? Well, since you were obviously a troglodyte during the decade, here are 10 quick titles for your Netflix list:

1) The Shawshank Redemption
2) Schindler's List
3) Goodfellas
4) Silence of the Lambs
5) Pulp Fiction
6) Fargo
7) Sling Blade
8) Forrest Gump
9) The Usual Suspects
10) Terminator 2

The Wook

EDIT: or, if lighter fare is your bag, try:

1) Dumb & Dumber
2) Clerks
3) Groundhog Day
4) Babe
5) Toy Story
6) Bob Roberts
7) Waiting For Guffman
8) The Freshman

Gladiator, Minority Report, Im with wook on this. Many good films come now too, and not all were great back in the day. But often I tend to like the feeling and pace of the older films. I take the Djungle book over any newer kids film, And it seems my son is feeling the same.

Somehow the pacing is too quick and to much happens. And the CG effects often spoils the feel.

It seems that they'd rather sacrifice good story for big explosions or fart jokes. T2 was about the only good movie in the 90s. I tend to like 80s films even if they were cheesy since that's when i was a kid and its a nostalgia thing. I miss the old musical scores movie had when it wasn't tied in with rock bands but you had actual instrumental scores. The fall of the old studio system didn't help.

Yep, in a time of sequels and prequels its an alternative to watch these old movies. Thought about to get the old horror movies lime The mummy, Frankenstein, Dracula, etc. and the Ray Harryhausen Collection... Good movies after all these years...

I have tnt and monstervision to blame for my love of old movies like those and even teh really really bad 50s scifi films i love. I get those bundle packs they offer of them at kmart and biglots all the time. I'm also trying to get 80s post apocalyptic b movies. Sadly the site that has them isn't very good anymore considering that its partially paid for by ads and sponsors like all the major tv stations.

How about Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, or Saving Private Ryan?

And on the lighter side, the Big Lebowski

Honestly, Hollywood has lost its faith in allowing the filmmakers actually tell the story they want to. I wish that there was a second Counter Culture-type revolution in Hollywood, where the studios trust the filmmakers in how to make the movie and just give them the money to make it. This picture pretty much explains it now.

TCM is the salvation of cable television (ok, that's a pretty big claim, but it's almost true :))

If I watch TV, I find myself gravitating towards that channel 9 out of 10 times.

One of my new favs from Jimmy Stewart is "The Shop Around the Corner". I've watched it a couple of times on TCM and just love it.
