What's the current buzz with the 2009 Trek phasers? QMX/Custom/Toy...

I heard QMX is going to be building one of these... anybody got any info on that? Is anyone working on a kit... maybe a hollow one? Anybody got any cool rebuilds of the toy? I'm jones'n for a fix! I'm trying hard to find a toy right now that I plan to rebuild... can't find them in stores anymore.

So Nothin huh? I seriously thought I read somewhere that QMX was going to make this one. I finally found a couple of the toy phasers and definitely plan to mod at least one. I'll start a new thread for that though when I get started.
But I was hoping someone would know SOMETHING?!

Nothing has really been released yet for the piece, just the announcement, I really hope they go all out and actually produce this piece, I was hoping that Efx got it, but as long as we dont get a "stunt" prop replica like the mal pistol i'll be happy

Even though I don’t really care for the design I would still like a better reproduction for my collection. In the meantime I have been building a hybrid from a playmates and rubies to stand in until a more accurate version comes along.
This is what I have so far.

Its still far from accurate but it should look better than just the plain toy.

nice looking hybrid snowshoe! Is the Rubies closer to the actual prop in terms of size? I did hear that the playmates was on the small side. Im sure a WIP thread for this phaser would be welcome!

Thanks for the compliments!
Size wise both are about the same. I kept the handle of the playmates and intend to graft the upper part of the rubies. The upper rubies portion seems a little closer to the screen used version but still has areas that need to be worked on. Neither is completely accurate to the original but I’ll try to do my best with what there is to work with. Painting this thing is going to be the fun part.

Here are some side by side comparisons.

Tops of both.

With rubies top in place.

I love the new Trek, but HATE the phaser design. That out of the way, I have to say I am impressed with that hybrid so far, John. Keep us updated. :thumbsup

Lookin' good so far!
As for me, It really does'nt matter when official replicas are released because I'm pretty sure I won't be able to afford them! My guess is a phaser replica will be at least $300:wacko

hopefully it will be a hero peice, with a motorized barrel and strobe light for firing! i can dream right?

Thought that I would post some progress pics before airbrushing the Alclad.

Fantastic work! If common sense doesn't prevail soon, I'll be looking for for a couple of Rubies and Playmate phasers before the day is out.

Very very nice, cant wait to see it finsihed, are you going to go with the two tone paint job or all of it alclad? What base black paint did you use, i always end of screwng up when working with the stuff

The one thing I really hate about the new phasers is the red/blue barrel. Reminds me of those popsicles we used to eat as kids...or still do...

That looks SO much better being partially painted like that. I agree that as a whole I dont like the new phaser design but I like what you are doing with the hybrid version you came up with.

Thanks again for the compliments!

I am indeed going with the two toned look. I’m not too sure what brand black paint was used (lots of overspray on can) so Future acrylic polish is going to be airbrushed on for a more glossy finish and to prevent possible interaction between the Alclad and base paint. A few places online state that this may be the best approach to achieve a decent chrome finish. There are still several areas that could have been done better (like the handle) but so far it doesn’t look too bad.
