What should I glue MR saber grips back on with?

Hi there,

The other day, I picked up my MR Vader SOTS saber for the first time, just out of the box (although it's been in storage for a while) and I noticed none of the grips were actually stuck to the saber.

Could anybody tell me what type of glue would be best to stick the rubber to the metal?

I've got some super glue and some of that white "tacky glue" that dries clear.

will any of these be any good?

thanks for any help

Richard

Super Glue (Cyanoacrylate) will stick rubber to metal providing the metal surface is scuffed up first. However Cyano has limited sheer strength and I'm afraid that with handling it will crack and you be back to square one.

My personal choice would be a two part epoxy glue again scuff the metal first and make sure it is one that will still give a strong bond if spread in a thin layer (it should say on the packet) JB Weld is a good one.

Hope this helps, if anyone has any further ideas please speak up.

Malc.

1) Wrong forum. How does this have to do with modeling?

2) What is a SOTS saber?

3) Go to Walmart's automotive section. Pick up a tube of body moulding adhesive. That's specifically designed for attaching rubber to metal, and resists heat/water/cold/rubbing/movement etc. It's the stuff they use to attach plastic body panels to cars, like side skirts, etc. Works nicely for saber grips.

Vandark, although modeling folks do know about glues, perhaps you'd like this moved to the prop forum? Let us know...

Feel free to move it. to be honest I struggled to decide which forum to post it in.

Thanks for all the answers, i'll try one of them out.

I think the original glue they used cracked off in the cold.

your best 2 options, depending on what is available to you, will be either a 2 part epoxy with a minimum of 15 minute work time or a silicone adhesive used for for automotive weather stripping.

Any of the big stores with an automotive and home repair section should carry both types.

JB Weld is the stuff. I've attached all the grips on all of my sabers with JB and you'd have to use a blow torch to get them off once that stuff cures. You could use that stuff to repair space shuttle tiles.

Which JB Weld Product are you using?

The very first one...it namesake...JB Weld.

There is a glue called "The Welder" that is available in well-stocked automotive sections. It is very similar to rubber cement, except it dries unbelievably strong. Because it is like rubber, it flexes, which makes it almost impossible to separate two pieces joined together with it even if you get a pry bar under an edge. Only way to get them apart is to use a knife to cut it.

Fantastic stuff. I keep a tube around at all times and use it for all sorts of things that need to be reattached.

About 5 years ago, I asked Jeff parks what he uses for his grips as they are stuck and do not come loose and he said that he uses a fiberglass double sided tape.

IIRC, he mentioned that it could be found at home depot.

I've had nothing but failures with double sided tape. At best it held the grips in place for a short while, and certainly wasn't "welded" to the flash tube. The grips would slip, slide and come loose with normal handling. The double sided tape nonsense is what sent me looking for an epoxy. It beats anything that any prop company like MR has ever used to attach grips. Icons grips came off easily, and the MR's have been known to come free. Using this stuff, you're talking a bond that you'll never be able to break in the course of handling, or even dueling, if that happens to be your geeky inclination. ;)

You need to clean the tube before you adhere anything. Plain old rubbing alcohol is fine. I've used epoxy and double sided tape. IMO double sided tape is easier.

thanks for all the tips.

I've ordered some of the JB Weld, but I could only find the quick dry.

I know it's not as strong, but the Saber is only for display anyway, so it should do the job.

thanks

Richard

You have chosen...wisely. ;)

Word of caution. I haven't used the JB product that you ordered, but if it is anything like the Weld...you don't need a lot of it. Just run a thin bead along the center of the backside of the grip. You don't want it oozing out from the underneath. And if you screw up, no biggie. The stuff doesn't set instantly. You'll have time to clean the grip and the tube off, if you need to, and start over. Just keep some acetone handy, just in case.

"2) What is a SOTS saber? "

The very, very rare "Song of the South" Vader saber?

That's right, it's the "James Baskett" signature edition.

I've used E-6000 and it works good. I'm currently using it to put aluminum grips on my Vader ROTJ.

You definitely have to degrease both parts...
