What Masks would YOU want

hi all.

Myself and a fellow sculptor are dipping our toe into mask making.

we are going to do a range of top quality latex masks (not the cheap crap sculpt, rubbish paint ones) but really nice detailed sculpts with real paintjobs.

we are also going to do a range of over the the head silicone masks similar to spfx masks but our own designs.

these masks are NOT going to be of characters or creatures from film as we dont want to breach any copyright laws. Thats not to say that if you said you really liked the bat in bram stokers dracula, we could look to do our own interpretation.

So if if you ever thought of a cool character or wanted a unique design executed, nows your chance so given the opportunity, what masks would you want and would you want it in latex or silicone?

Good luck with it bud, be interesting to see what you can come up with.
I've allways fancied having a go at silicone, but it used to be to pricey, i've repaired a few of Randys masks over the years, silicone is great stuff, but sometimes the weight can cause damage, especially around the lip area, it really needs a stretchable fabric implanting in it. and a headform to keep it on

Hard to tell... Probably I shoud design them to describe what I have in mind... But also a re-interpretation or redesign of the classic monsters (vampire, werewolf, mummy, Frankenstein creature, black lagoon creature, undead, etc...)

I'd like to see a Nosferatu/Barlow mask and a Curse of the Werewolf Mask.

I know these are from movies, but I think they could be made without any legal problems.

Ya know...I've always wanted a mask of Grig from the "Last Starfighter". I always thought that would be the coolest costume!

Just so you know, the market for original pieces isn't that great. More people buy replicas than anything. Horror wise, Myers is the biggest seller. If you want to go down the original route, zombies are a great seller, so are werewolves, unless they're extremely expensive.

Does it infringe on rights to make masks of real people? Or could you get away with just doing a likeness?

The reason I ask is because I know a lot of people display their costumes on mannequins and some people can afford to have a full sculpt done to make it look good. But a latex mask over a head form would be good enough for me.

Even if it doesn't look identical to the person who played the character, you might be able to find a market.

Other than that, you could also do realistic looking animals. There are a lot of plays and musicals that require masks - Narnia is one and Into the Woods needs a wolf that isn't a warewolf. I've gotten quite a few emails from people asking how I made my masks, so I imagine there is a market out there for it.

How about any Life-Casts of famous actors, such as Malcolm Reynolds aka Nathan Fillion, or Jayne Cobb aka Adam Baldwin, Indiana Jones, Decker, Han Solo aka Harrison Ford, Rick O'Connell aka Brendan Fraiser, Hellboy aka ROn Pearlman, Blade aka Wesley Snipes. Any of these as a latex mask casting.
Just some food for thought.

The Joker's goon mask from The Dark Knight would be excellent:

I know you said no licensed characters, but- Venom with mouth closed. Based on Bagley or McFarlane artwork, preferably Bagley style, with a million little long sharp teeth. I say mouth closed, because with a costume, the only way to pull it off is to have a moving mouth and tongue. But mouth closed- no problem. Like this-
