What are you going as for SDCC 09?

Guys,
I have NEVER been to a con before - and being a big fanboy myself, that's pretty lame.
Attending Comicon has become more and more a dream of mine, but I would like a little primer on how to plan on attending one year - what are the costs and other details I need to get in order? How do I secure any special passes for meet and greets with stars?
Any advise will be helpfull!

My first time was two years ago and I seriously didn't know what to expect...it truly is a sight to behold. Honestly? All you really need is a wallet full of cash, your Con ticket receipt and a camera.

After making your way through the lobby, you'll have to travel up a few escalators to get your Con badge. The line moves pretty quick there...just show your receipt to get it scanned and they'll hand you a badge and a holder.

Before you start nosing around the booths, you should check to see if there are any screenings or discussions in the other rooms. The bigger, more star-studded panels will have a line out the door. There's no special passes that I know of that will ensure a meet and greet with the celebs...just waiting patiently to get into a panel room. Some people "camp" during panels...meaning they go to the first one of the day and just stay in the room as different panels/celebs/screenings pass in and out.

Usually a company there will provide you with a huge bag to hold your goodies (me and my girl still use the huge red Smallville bags WB was giving out for our laundry). Goodies include whatever toys, statues, comics that you decide to buy...as well as all the free stickers, magnets, keychains, mini-posters that companies are giving away.

Food there sucks (somewhat predictably). This year, I'm filling up at a McDonald's for breakfast, bottled water throughout the day, and finishing up with a slab of ribs from Dick's Last Resort down the street from the con.

But before you do ANYTHING...if you're planning to stay all four days and the Preview night, get your tickets ASAP. I waited until April to get mine and could only snag a single day. If you happen to be in the art/film/comics industry, you can apply for a pair of 4-day Professional passes for free. All you need is a pair of W-2's or pay stubs detailing your work. And what's phucking with me now is finding a decent hotel that's walking distance to the convention center. Me and my lady decided we didn't wanna room with six other people so she's currently calling every relative she knows who works in the hotel industry to get us a room that won't eat up my entire toy budget.

There's no shame in not going to a Con. Hell, it took ME 26 years to finally go to one. But since I only live two hours away from San Diego, I decided to make it a yearly trip. Hope you make it out next year, brother!

They've changed the submission standards for professional passes this year. They are much more stringent. They require a couple different kinds of examples of artwork, credits, etc. To prove you are a working professional within the industry. No IT, HR, finance, etc people are allowed pro badges anymore. They are trying to keep it limited to "talent."

With good reason...some of my buddies are CG animators and they got pissed at all the secretaries and assistants who were gabbing to their friends about "going to that one place that was in Entourage that one time." The first time I went was on Sarah Silverman's dime because I did a series of sculptures for her show. Now that I'm a Nurse, I gotta pay for my tickets like a regular old shnook :lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol:lol

Yeah they've been cutting back on attendance amount the last few years. Cutting down on professional badges, professional guests, and exhibitor badges was the next logical step. Especially the pro badges, I knew a lot of people who had them for like no reason. I think they should do away with the 3 year grandfather clause on them and make people re-apply every year. But that's because I hate how crowded it is.

On topic:

I'm going to be going as Obi-Wan from The Clone Wars and showing off all my new armor.

And I'll also have my new Fenn Shysa (Mandalorian from the old Marvel Comics) costume. I'm still finishing it up so I don't have full pics of it, but here's the helmet:

Any more in progress pics of this costume? Ive always wanted to see a completed shysa.

I'll be Spartan on Thurs, and maybe friday. BSG bdu's with Kim on Saturday. Secret Masquerade costumes on sunday :)

Darth P, that looks so cool. I love carbord armor, you did a really nice job. I will look for you at the convention.

That's an incredible suit of armor and one hell of a way to deal with the crowds! They'll be cutting you a wide berth in that beast!

I have some progress pics but nothing really worth showing. If all goes well I should be able to suit up this weekend for some shots. If so I can post another teaser.

Still trying to decide if I want to wear Ravenclaw robes. If not, then it's X-Wing Pilot on Friday and Secret Masquerade Costume on Sunday. :)

I ended up not wearing my Masquerade costume on Sunday. After only getting 2 hours of sleep, I didn't want to deal with the layers, repairs, wig, and makeup that this costume required. However, we still did awesome at Masquerade. My group won Best Presentation for our skit Bring It On: Rock the Mouse.

I had the fun task of being the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. The dress took over 2 months and still wasn't done. I'm going to go back and completely redo the bodice, collar, and wig, but here's what I got:

Black and red triple plush velvet, white fake fur, black crepe, and yellow and gold satin. My sewing machine did NOT like sewing through all that.
