WETA: District 9 Guns

D'oh. Curse you, RSloan! :) I thought that was one of the Image Engine renders, and had it filed with production images. It looks a hell of a lot like the IE render of the assault rifle.

Drat!! Now I want to know what RSloan's ref was for the right side of the gun...

Drat, that means two or three more weeks for those of us in Oz, I guess.

Anyone who disses the GP (Zorg, I'm looking at you! :p ) should freeze-frame the scenes where it is in closeup in the MNU lab and just picture that weathering job. Mmmm!!!!

Dang, I really was starting to want a second GP to paint orange. :D Good news though, it took a while but I'm glad to hear the GP was a success overall too.

I take it back, got my shipping notice today. Swoite!

Reckon the AR will sell out sooner than the GP did...

I need to pop in the film to take a look at the gas projector again. I'm sure it'll look fantastic above or below the AG :thumbsup

Sadly, I didn't order it though :thumbsdown

I had the GP on order but canceled it...Martyn I don't want to see any of your mod pics or I know I will be kicking myself

ICHIBAN!!!!! :) My GP just arrived. It's in a HUGE box* right behind me...at my desk...at work...where I can't open it! I'll post pics in a few hours, but man, the suspense is killing me.

It's 2/200. Holy geeze. Now I kinda don't want to even open the box, let alone mod it. Thanks, Weta! And yet, thanks for nothing! :lol

Seriously, does anyone think an edition number that low warrants special treatment? Would collectors pay a premium for that? As previously discussed, there's nothing on the guns themselves, no COA, etc.

* Half again as wide as the AG box. Wow.

And yeah, as strange as it sounds, even though there is no more than numbering on the box, I do think some people would pay more for that low number. I couldn't tell you why, but I am sure they would

Glenn, LOL, I'll think about it. :) I've actually asked Darren whether there's a waiting list...if I can score a second one I might stash this one unmodified. Or do a VERY careful rework based off the MNU test gun, only. I really want to cut loose and do one in the overall orange scheme though...dammit...

Anyway, on with the show!

Proof! I know it shouldn't matter but I can't help being pleased! :D

BIG box. Red tape - Customs? There's a scrawled sig on the box but no Customs notification:

Big inner box too:

Usual standard of packaging. Actually this time there are no twist ties or other complications; it's really easy to open up. Just slice three bits of tape. I didn't unpack or shoot the mounting hardware, but it's there.

Ta daaa! So fresh it's still covered in polystyrene, sorry, I was in a frenzy. :lol

Canister:

One downside: the paint chipping is even WORSE this time, if that's possible!

Yuck:

This one's not as bad:

Goo is more yellow this time:

Trigger is noticeably fixed/integral, that'll need tweaking:

Middle fittings:

Other side:

Finish is even more matte than the Arc Gen. The large marking is upside down and undersized VS the one in the MNU scene. Overall it should be quite a bit glossier, and the silver HAS to go:

Middle:

Business end. Airbrush splatter is also a bit meh. The barrel is quite long but you can see raw fibreglass inside. The finish is smoother than the Arc Gen - only faint CNC tooling marks visible on the upper surface of the barrel and a few other places:

Worst feature of these guns. Weta, ask the factory not to bother, wouldja? :)

Lugging handle. This is absolutely solid enough to hoik the thing around with. :thumbsup

So there you have it. It's overall slightly smaller than the Arc Generator, as you'd expect. It feels very solid, it's nicely detailed (really crisp), reasonably heavy and very decently finished for the price. It is a GREAT base for more complex custom paintwork.

From the point of view of a customer wanting just to buy and display it without fiddlefarting around with the paint job, the only niggle is the silver chipping/scratching. I understand that it would be prohibitively expensive to do a Weta-level job in mass production but I do think these props might look better without the attempt even being made. Let customers do it themselves if they want it.

Overall rating: top notch! Do want a second one.

Its beauuutifulll!! I had one ordered and canceled it because of money probs. Argh!!. I am kicking myself. I emailed David last week and asked if there was a wait list, but he's away till tomorrow. I am hoping he opens my email first.

It does look like it needs one of your famous reworks. that silver blobbed on looks a bit ordinary.

I'm sure he will; I only emailed him today so you're well ahead of me. And it was only last week that they sold out. With units actually shipping I don't know if there'll be any more cancellations but we may hope. It does happen a lot in my experience.

LOL @ famous reworks. I've only done the one and it's still a WIP, but thanks, heh. And yeah, it's just nasty, that silver. Look at what it SHOULD look like - the original Weta piece is awesome!

There is a bit more to repaint than I thought, BTW. Quick! Someone offer me a daft price for it! Edition number 2, folks...EDITION NUMBER TWO!!! :lol

geez.....they are REALLY getting sloppy with the finishing on these.

i wouldn't even think twice about repainting this, its a no brainer.

#2 or not.

looks like i'll be repainting my assault rifle if this is the sort of finish (goo and chipping) they are churning out now.

Well, if I was to get really picky I could mention that the orange striping isn't screen-accurate either - it's too thick and doesn't completely represent the pattern seen on screen.

Yeah, it's a no-brainer to me, too. If my motorbike hadn't blown its clutch to tiny pieces last Tuesday I wouldn't even be entertaining these thoughts. :(

I do expect to have to repaint the assault rifle fairly extensively.

i don't think a guy like you could leave this alone ;)

especially after what you did to your AG :eek:eek

looking forward to seeing what you do with this one :thumbsup

I guess the brief description would be "more than you'd think", lol. I've been studying the reference, what there is of it. (Hurry up, that damn book!). Yeah...more than you'd think.
