Weekly Mythbusters Discussion Thread

Another great episode.

It was exciting seeing the Bourne myth and awesome to see Adam's prop bank bag and contents. I hope they explore some other possible myths from the Bourne movies. The explosion at the end was sweet.

I was very surprised at the Blue Ice myth. I had never heard it, and in the set-up my natural assumption was that the blue water would not freeze because it had an anti-freeze agent in it (possibly because it's stored in an unheated, unpressurized area of the plane). I was very surprised to see it actually freeze and then break off when the temperature increased. The final test at the end was really awesome.

I re watched the mask episode tonight and I noticed the nose on the Jamie mask wasn't right. Jamie's nose is much rounder in profile than the mask.

Biggest issue with the masks is that the Myth Busters were using them to impersonate some one else. While the masks are pretty good, they will not pass muster if you are trying to impersonate a specific person.

Taking speach, mannerisms out of the equation, there is still the issue of head size. Jamie has a larger head than Adam, which is why the fake Adam was not as convincing.

To make things worse, both adam & Jamie have facial hair, making the masks bulge in weird places and not sit well.

I have a couple of masks. One realistic and one horror. The realistic mask would pass a cursory exam. Scared my mother in law silly when i walked in with mask on. Almost called the police, except my wife stopped her because she knew I am prone to pulling stunts like that.

However, if you are trying to impersonate a specific person, you would need to be the same size and have a similar sized and shaped head. And then, you would need to mimic the individual's mannerisms, voice, etc

The Discovery website and the MB facebook page have visor highlights from new episodes. Not the same as the whole show but still great stuff.

both the new episodes were brilliant. The masks should have been made over there own cast (they must have at least one each of themselves that they could have donated). the blue ice myth. grant nd tories reaction when the chunk came off was classic

New episode tonight April 20th !

Episode Detail: Running on Water - MythBusters
Adam and Jamie try to walk on water; Kari, Grant and Tory try to bomb-proof common items.

Another great episode, but I did have mixed feeling.

I usually prefer more straight-up Myths being tested then viral-videos. Some of the viral-videos have been really epic, like the Thermite on ice, the coffee creamer cannon, the surfing a wave caused by an explosion, the ramp-into-pool-of-water, and the most-epic motorcycle-pulling-the-tablecloth.

But this viral-video was a little weak. It was cool enough to be tested, but I would have preferred this one tested in a 'viral-video special' then being the whole episode.

No matter how spectacular the video looked I find it hard to believe that anyone really believed that you could run on water, even for a few steps. The process Adam and Jamie used was interesting and both the runner and the acrobat were very impressive but I'm bummed that it took a whole hour show for the inevitable failure.

The highlight was Adam and Jamie's banter together and they really were having fun. Sometimes that's even better then seeing a good myth tested.

On the other side the bomb proofing stuff was stellar. Always fantastic to see explosions and the testing method was solid and the results interesting. If I was ever in a situation with a pending explosion I feel confident running about 20 feet and then diving behind just about anything would be fine because it seems to be survivable.

I don't get the part where they say you'd need shoes a mile long and half mile wide to walk on water. If you can float in a ten foot boat, why would shoes need to be a mile long?

This reminded me of the Ninja myth, when Adam made those big pontoon shoes. Sure they failed, but would they really need to be a mile long to work?

I agree that some of the "myths" are getting weak, but at this point I'm sure new and interesting ideas are getting pretty thin. I was concerned the show might have jumped the shark last season when they did the Seth Rogen/Green Hornet Movie Myths episode, which was clearly nothing more than promotion for the movie, but the episodes have been pretty strong this season (so far, anyway).

As for the "running on water" myth, they already knew how it was done. But they had to go through the process to show those viewers who couldn't figure it out for themselves; they do this at least once every season. It fills air time and, hopefully, proves to some viewers that they can't believe everything they see.

There are two things I never tire of seeing on Mythbusters. First are the experiments where Adam and Jamie are genuinely surprised by the results of their tests. Second is the shock wave shown on the high speed footage when there's a big explosion. The explosions themselves are interesting, but seeing that expanding "bubble" of air being displaced is, to me, truly cool.

Great thread!

The mask episode was a little frustrating. I realise they were replicating the pull over style shown in the mission imposible episodes, but I really hoped they would take it further. Perhaps they will...

The biggest problems were:

1) The masks not being sculpted over lifecasts
2) The eyes and mouth could have been applied by an artist for a perfect fit.
3) The paint job on the masks was awsome but way to perfect. Almost like
adam and jamie 20 years ago! lol

Also, I really wish they had tested the masks in a more real life environment. For example, my guess is Jamies workshop would now have security due to their fame. It would have been great to see if adam could have driven up as jamie and simply been let through. I think that would be a more real world use for something like this.

Please revisit this guys! Please!!

i agree running on water was a bit weak, but the what is explosive made up for it a bit. it does seam that they are slowly running out of ideas what with teh best of collection they had a while back, hopefuly the fan site can keep them going a little while longer

New episode tonight 4-27

Episode Detail: Bubble Trouble - MythBusters
A carbonated water myth is tested; an experiment using an arrow fitted with explosives is conducted.

Okay, a little behind but I'm catching up.

Usually I either enjoy both Adan and Jamie's myth as much as the Build Team, or I feel that Kari, Grant and Tori got the awesome Myth and I like it much better the the one Adam and Jamie are testing. Very rarely do I enjoy Adam's Myth more, just equal.

This episode I enjoyed the Myth Adam and Jamie tested so much more then the other one.

I had never heard the Myth that you can't swim in carbonated water. My first thought was "where the hell are you ever going to find a source of carbonated water big enough that you even could swim in ?". The Myth seemed far-fetched but I was willing to tag along for the ride.

I enjoyed the small scale test and Jamie's solution to making bubbles in water was really neat. I would probably have drilled thousands of holes in a sheet of metal like he suggested, the canvas was a stroke of genius.

I was a little bummed that the test rig was only 4 feet wide and 16 feet long. I think with the biggest material being the canvas they could have gone much bigger so Adam was not pushed to the side so easily. The underwater antics were epic setting it up and I'm a lot like Adam in that I love results that you didn't expect. Overall I really enjoyed everything about the swimming in carbonated water Myth.

On the other side, I really didn't 'get' the other Myth. So, a fan writes in and says his father would tie dynamite to an arrow, shoot it at a tree, and the explosion would split the tree ?

First, this is not a Myth. It's a story. Second, I know they like/use view suggestions but this one seemed really weak. Again, I think it would have been better as a mini-myth on a view special then used in an entire episode.

I was hoping the pay-off would be seeing a tree split with explosives but as cool as explosions are all they really did was blow-up a tree. Still, I always love the banter between the team and it's always neat to see the process.

I give the episode a B+. Hoping for an A+ on the next one.

New Episode TONIGHT !! 5/4

Episode Detail: Torpedo Tastic - MythBusters
An ancient torpedo is built to test a myth; an experiment involving a truck full of wine is conducted.

BTW, is Kari pregnant again ?

I know they shoot and air episodes out of order, and some episodes are long-term filming but I noticed last week some interesting wardrobe and I swear she looks a little pregnant.

After her daughter was born she really slimmed down so I'm guessing it's just my imagination. But I thought I'd ask if anyone knew.
