Watchmen (HBO TV series)

Nice to finally get some solid ties with the Ozymandius plot instead of it just being a side plot with no connection

Also we finally get the answer to how Angela survived the White Night when that guy had the gun pointed to her face.

I also loved the chicken vs the egg enigma. They really have done spectacular build-up and it's now paying off

And again, they have done an amazing job at interweaving all of it with the original comic in a way that feels right instead of forced

Also, the Peteypedia files have some interesting stuff in them

There is one entry that references Batman as essentially being a 70's low budget rip off of Nite Owl

"...Mr. Ebert notes that Sister Night belonged to a subgenre called “Black Mask” movies — responses or parodies of masked vigilantes. Some were very specific; The Black Superman, for example, was an on-the-nose spoof of Dr. Manhattan. Others, like Sister Night, Tarantula, and Batman, were expressions of archetypes forged by the likes of Silhouette, Mothman, or Nite Owl...."

If we get a 2nd season, which if happens probably wouldn't be till 2022? I would love to actually see Nite Owl more heroes and teams in other places. I think there's still plenty alluded to in this season to grow from and weave into new stories and characters. BUT if we get no more, I'm super happy with this one season. That was what I always loved about the original comic. Beginning, middle, end. No issue 465 Dr. Manhattan evil clone attacks!

Kind of like what we've been talking about with Ghostbusters: Afterlife, it's nice to see a story about saving the world NOT set in a major metropolis, especially a superhero one.

Question - why didn't Will recognize (or maybe, why did he act like he didn't recognize) the name "Jon Osterman"? Hadn't Dr. Manhattan's real name been known to the world for decades at that point? If nothing else, didn't Janey Slater "out" him back in '85?

There are all kinds of famous people that I’d have no idea who they were if they introduced themselves to me.

I was going back through episodes the other day and I noticed when 7K had Blake in that...warehouse???...that the equipment they were using to build the portal had the same “T” logo on them that we’ve seen at Trieu’s facilities.

I’m wondering if they stole the stuff...or did she provide it???

But the name of the world’s first and only super-powered hero - a God-like being who single-handedly won the Vietnam war? I think you’d remember/recognize that name. Especially if you were a former masked hero yourself.

I caught that, too, and was thinking the same thing. Is she in cahoots on this massive conspiracy, or are her products just so pervasive and widespread that everybody is using them? Similar to how everyone seemed to be using a Veidt product in the graphic novel.

Given that she seems to be an analogue (and possibly daughter) of Veidt, both explanations make sense.

That’s what I thought as well...it could just be that basically every bit of tech is from her company, so that’s just what you have when you buy it...but there’s also a bit of reason to believe she may harbor some...feelings...towards Doc Manhattan, what with him pretty much single handedly turning her country into a State.

Either is plausible.

Maybe it's like if someone said it's Saul Hudson, and you said who, and they they said you know...Slash

or someone said it's Vincent Furnier and you say who...and they say, you know.. Alice Cooper :D

Everyone knows "Dr Manhatten" moniker, but maybe not every one may recognize that as Jon Osterman?

Yeah, I suppose that could be it. But still, you’d think the name of a “God-who-walks-the-earth” might stick with people more than some old-ass musicians.

All the more so since Will is a masked-hero “insider,” and his lover actively tried to recruit Jon to join The Crimebusters in ‘66.

I think you’re vastly underestimating people’s ability to be ignorant, especially of things that they don’t particularly care about, and after what we saw of Will’s interaction with other heroes, I wouldn’t particularly blame him for not caring about any heroes.

There’s also the whole “You’re a young black man, and I know Jon Osterman as a white guy that turned into a glowing blue entity” aspect.

It’s entirely possible that the name registered, but the look didn’t match, so you react with a “Who?”

Well, that’s a good point, and perhaps that is what they intended, but I think it requires the viewer to “read into” the scene quite a bit.

I guess I just thought that “Jon Osterman” would have been a household name at that point. Like everyone knows that Superman is Clark Kent or Batman is Bruce Wayne, except (in this universe) it’s ”real life,” making it even more of a big deal.

It’s a small quibble, and frankly, not significant given how many other details from the comic they absolutely nailed.
