Besides the ROTJ version which was made for the final film from a MGC,

Was there ever a metal DH-17 prop or were they all resin catsings?

Well...since the resin DH17´s were casts of a molded master, there should at least have been one blaster with "more" metal parts ;)

If they were all castings of castings, I'd think theyshould all look pretty shoddy, wouldn't they?

The ANH DH-17's look really shoddy.
The ESB's look much better.

Both blasters look like they were made from a similar master -maybe the same one with modifications- namely the mag well is not on the ANH version.
I'm thinking maybe the ANH is 2 generations away from the master. A first gen casting was made and the mag well was removed and some other little tweaks (trigger guard thickened, round domes on rear site, scope rail added) then they cast that to make the final guns.
Pics of ANH mold:

For ESB I think they went back to the master and made a new mold. This time they included the mag well.

So besides this theoretical master I would say there were no metal ANH or ESB DH17's.

Has anyone ever made a Hyper-Firm DH-17 Blaster? I have converted a Hasbro version, but would LOVE a Hyper-Firm version.

Thanks.
