Want to bet it wasn't the studios afraid of offending China but their large corporate partners and shareholders with ties to corporations that use Chinese made products?

Well, the writer of this also wrote the game Homefront which is centered around a N.Korean invasion of the United States. Video game tie-in, perhaps?
I hope you are right. They have tried pretty hard to stop movies being released in Australia, up to and including cyber attacks on the theatres and film festivals showing the films in question.
