Warehouse 13 - The Tesla Gun

Hey peeps,
I'm making Claudia's Civil War Dress from 3x04 (Queen for a Day) and I'm totally making a 'Mini-Tesla' for it as well as (if I can) Ulysses S. Grant's flask...
Does anyone have any tips on her Mini-Tesla?

I've been looking through vacuum tube specs and images. Decided to go with 3-4" tube to minimize the possibility of breakage and the price issue. Waiting on the rifle stock to show up then I'll start in and post photos in a separate thread.

My wife's a preschool teacher. She gets them from seminars / conventions. Look for pre-school supplies, school science equipment, plastic test tubes, etc.

I have a couple tubes that those Hexbug toys come in.
Just a tad over 1" dia and 4.5" long.

Kids are always stealing the toys so I was able to get a couple tubes for free.
Still looking for more.

Them's the ones! I've never paid for them as wifey gets them free at her Early Childcare Development seminars.
Glad they're so cheap!

Anybody see the new Mini-Tesla Claudia built for Steve in last nights episode?
This is the coolest one yet IMHO:

Sorry for the crappy pics - best I could do!

I was just going to post these same screencaps in another thread, but then someone pointed here before I could post them... but mine may be a little higher-res, so here you go:

Not seen the episode yet but it seems like they're just making new Teslas for the hell of it now. They must have more of the standard issue Teslas in stock in the warehouse. Also given that Claudia figured out how they worked and can make new ones, why is she making them look so old? She is a child of the late 20th / early 21st century so she'd be quite capable of making them modern looking.

The originals are a bit awkward and her Deringer style one addressed that a bit.

Actually this one looks like the most "cobbled together" one so far and just looks like it's made from bits leftover in a "junk box" and ill-conceived and unfinished but each to his own.

Update: Seems it was made by QMx for the show and they will be selling replicas of it next year. Supposed to be a Claudia mini-Tesla sometime too.

It is quite shoddy. Notice how the back tube doesn't keep in line with the front tube and central barrel that runs through. It's like a nice straight line til the end and then it looks broken. And be metal plating looks haphazard and non-functional.
That said, it looks a lot better from the other side.

They seem to be proud of that piece of junk referring to it as the Artisan series.
Preschoolers maybe.:thumbsdown

Kenney's original Tesla was different and pretty neat. When I said it was a bit awkward, it was a comment more about the practicality of it rather than design. Claudia's little one is sort of neat looking and practical and the new one looks like it would stand up to quite rigorous use on the set but it is ugly. I may still have to try to make one day just to have a set of Teslas.

Except for the petrified wood, most of it looks like it could be done with limited tools except for having to turn a few pieces of brass. Maybe something like soapstone could be used too for the handle part if one could have it cut or cast it in resin or polystone.

I still have to build my original Tesla and have mostly finished a "micro-Tesla" based on a tiny toy Deringer. I want to do the original one justice and have the charging box for it too. I have the meter ready. I know Claudia has made them self-recharging now but I thought box we saw in the pilot was neat and will make a good display.

Health issues have gotten in the way of a lot of stuff recently. I have so much to finish let alone stuff I've not even started yet.

So after reading through this thread and many many hours of labor, I have finally finished my replica! (ok, well there are a couple more things to do, but it's like 99% done)

These are some pretty terrible photos of it. I have since trimmed down the wire and now I just have to figure out how to stick it down without shorting the circuit. There are LEDs in the tube that light up, and once I get everything all nice and finished, I'll post pics of it lighting up.
