Warehouse 13 - The Tesla Gun

First of all Clinton, Welcome to the forum.
Don't be shy about your work, many of the folks here are just buyers and not builders so show your stuff.:thumbsup

You won't learn anything if you don't try, besides you can get helpful pointers on improving your work.

Trying to do some research on the tubes, they do appear to be the real deal. Has anyone mention the fact that 2 of the tubes are blown. Seems the Tesla gun runs on blown tubes.:lol

I'm not a model builder, but somehow I decided to try to build a Tesla Gun -- using mostly wood. It was not turning out well (again, not really a model builder), so I purchased the GoodModel garage kit at Dragon*Con. I realized right away that I would be better off using some of my pieces to substitute for the kit pieces -- the vacuum tubes in particular.

I was actually thinking about that. Using pieces of the GoodModel kit and modifying it, adding real tubes, ect. I donno how good it would be though.

Actually, these tubes appear to be on the cheap side. I'm thinking that's so they can replace them easily. I'm pretty sure I've got the two rear tubes figured out, still working on the front one. Need another day or two.

In regards to the round piece,I was hot on the trail of vintage Penn fishing reels, because of the 2 screws top and bottom. But I'm leaning toward 2 pieces of round brass, with some sort of custom insert for the middle. Alot of deep sea fishing reels have the same look but where the 2 meter readings are is inset. All the ones I can find are flush with the outside.

The one item that's going to be tough is the brass looking trigger.Anyone else have any ideas:confused

I have no experience of prop making as such prior to becoming a member of the RPF. It's a great collaborative and supportive place. Lot's of clever talented people who are quite willing to share their secrets and ideas. Plus you'll always get an honest critique of your stuff. It's a good place to show off what you've done.

I'm not sure I have any business posting to a site like this, looking at the outstanding work you folks do. But if it's not inappropriate, I'll try to upload some images at some point.

I wonder what the "Tesla-like" zap gun was that was used by Helena (H.G Wells) in the 2nd last episode of this season. Is it something she invented or stole from the warehouse? Is it like a Tesla's Telsa, like we have the Farnsworth's Farnsworth??

Doesn't look as complicated...

OK from that catalogue of auction stuff we have some info about the Tesla prop.

"Intricately constructed from an aluminium frame with resin handle and incorporating vacuum tubes, brass and copper elements. ......... Measures 8 1/2 in. long."

I'm assuming that 8.5" is from the back of the handle (tip of the rear most vacuum tube) to the tip of the coil at the front.

It might now be easier to work out the sizes of some of the parts used to make it.

This seems quite considerably smaller than originally proposed. It is assuming that whoever measured it, did so correctly, but given it's an auction item, it is probably right.

There are two nice clear photos of it in the catalogue too.

Yes that was well caught. I expect these are mostly available as reproductions and customs but I would have thought even those would be quite expensive items. Maybe they bought some of the parts or had access to a badly damaged one. I think they've made the tube body and rubber/resin hand grip and added the underhammer parts. The stuff at the end of the barrel could be bought items or stuff they've turned/milled.

Good eye! I wonder if they recreated it or took apart an antique...
